How many polys in a 75 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's certainly not true. The fish will keep growing and will end up becoming stunted & deformed which leads to a very short & miserable life.

Besides, that argument is the same garbage that some stores will use to get people to purchase fishes that will certainly outgrow the space that is provided for them. Sure, the fish *might* stop "growing," but it certainly isn't going to live for very long in too small of an aquarium due to a variety of factors.

*sigh* Tank police have arrived...

Cause it's true? Either a) they won't stop growing and It will get to the point where the fish can hardly move, b) they grow stunted and disfigured, c) they stop growing but their organs don't. Well none of those options sound healthy to me, have fun with your unhealthy fish keeping style.

Ok... I'm gonna assume that you don't have a ridiculously large tank. Say 1000gal +? ANY FISH in the wild has the entire body of water they are in to live and thrive. So based on your post, all fish keepers are brutal fish killing monsters! Any fish you keep will be limited to a person's budget and a box, rectangle, or whatever you want to call it. I'll call it a prison. They will be unhealthy fish for the rest of their life seeing how they are in an aquarium instead of in the wild.

I'm sure 7-8 polys in a 75gal will do fine!

Keep all the fish you want! Make sure your filter can handle the bio load and do water changes! They'll eventually stop growing if they have no more growing space. People overstock fish tanks all the time, I don't see why you can't. Beware! Most people on MFK are tank police :flamed:

Are you stupid? First you say the above, then you switch it to me saying that all fish will become stunted. I was talking about how your theory of fish keeping is idiotic and cruel, not all fish keeping. I'm guessing you're no older then 16.

The idea is to provide appropriate filtration levels as well as enough space to avoid the problems associated with not having enough space for any given fish; others have learned through firsthand experience what does & doesn't work. No one can perfectly replicate the conditions that are provided in the wild, but we still must try to avoid stunting as well as simply cramming too many fishes in an aquarium (even if stunting isn't a problem).

In this case, I think that filtration, the species that will be kept, feeding, and inter-species behavior will all come into play for determining whether or not the OP can pull off having a bunch of bichirs in that aquarium.

Please take it easy as we need to try to keep this thread on track for the benefit of the OP & her fishes.

The OP posted about wanting each of the fish listed plus maybe 1-2 ropefish (I think?). I was referring the words "Keep all the fish you want!" towards her(?) list. Overstocking is very common in this hobby as well. LFS and countless of other people do the same. If you want to talk about idiotic and cruel, I could show you. Please read and do not assume that I mean to keep so many fish to where they can't move (That makes no sense! You get fish to observe them and take care of them). 7-8 fish in a 75 gal should have enough space. Not only that, Polys tend to "bichir pile" to feel more secure and safe. So assuming that those 7-8 fish are polys or ropefish, the OP can keep them all in the 75gal

Your clarification of your previous statement helps clear things up a bit as far as what you meant.

Also, many people as well as most stores are not good examples of proper fish keeping...

Alright then I retract my statement, I thought you meant overstock however you want, however I still highly disagree with you saying that they will only grow to the size of the tank. And I do agree that 7-8 upper jaw species(excluding ornate and tuegelsi) will probably be fine in a 75g for life.
