I used to have a good sized collection of Motoros of all different types (marbles, chain links, blue, orange spot), along with some other rays. A little over a year ago, they city was repairing a some a water main near my house. The day they were doing it (not knowing they were doing it of course) I decided to do a water change. My water changes are big, like 80-90 percent big. The guys working on the city had pumped in so many chemicals to clean up the main from the construction that after that big of a water change, within a half an hour my rays started to curl. It wasn't two hours before I had lost 7 rays (four motoro, two schroederi, and an orbygini). Even though I do use some water conditioners, it wouldn't have mattered, by that point it probably would have made it worse.
I have learned my lesson and now I am a lot more careful. I have recently invested in an R/O unit for extra safety. I have also gotten on the municipality about putting unsafe amounts of chlorine, and other chemicals in our water. Sure we can drink it with little ill effect, but that doesn't mean it's safe.
Two weeks later a friend of mine, who lives a few blocks away, lost 40 of his discus due to a similar situation.
In Nova Scotia we have four seasons... Winter...Winter..Winter ... and Construction season!
