How many Red Pacu's Can I Have?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok first off a jdm would be if he had 10 pacu in a 5 thousand gallon tsnk with a few aros and a ret tail cat they can all move around comfortably there are just a lot of them. this tank would be animal cruelty

zander, I'm not sure if you have read all of the JDM discussion threads lately?

people have been defending JDM and crazy overstocked tanks like crazy lately and now it seems like most of the people who are against JDM and tanks like the OP has have given up trying to defend themselves and are resorting to the old classic, "its your tank do what you want"

and it almost seems like the OP was just trying to cause trouble, 5 minutes of research would have answered pretty much all of his questions? Its like he was just hoping someone would tell him that they have a tank like that and it is doing good.

and yea, to the OP, pretty much all of your fish are going to outgrow that tank shortly.

mhm i have no problem with overstocked tanks assuming all fish can move around confortably and you have the filtration to process all the ammonia/nitrite

theres a very fine line between an overstocked tank and a too small tank

example if i had 15 red bellied piranhas in a 150 gallon tank that would be overstocked they can all still move around theres just a ton of them if i put an arapaima in said tank that would be too small becuase it would grow to a point where it would no longer be able to comfortably swim around.

I hear you, and I agree with you.

but some of the recent JDM tank threads there has been little difference between people defending JDM and people defending animal cruelty. it got to a point where I couldn't tell the difference and too me it seemed like people were defending animal cruelty and suggesting that the entire hobby was animal cruelty

Thank you for all the advice and I never knew how much people would argue over a question like tis. I am getting rid of the pacus and some of thecichlids are going to be moved to my new tank. I do not plan on overstocking the fish tank, I work with what I have and eventually I build up everyone cant afford to but a 1000 Gallon aquarium.

its your tank do what you want. yeah its definately over stocked. the way i see it is the fish are better off in your tank then in a 15g tank at the fish store. most of the people that have monsterfish, arowana for example keep them in tanks that are to small. other then some people on MFK how many people can actually keep a 24" or larger fish comfortably? most pacus purchased at wall mart or any lfs end up in ten gallon tanks, and end up back in a fish store only to be put back in a tank that is way to small. do what you want and don't let people talk you out of getting rid of your fish.

that's pretty much the worst suggestion I've read so far.....:banhim:

Howdy,

I am moving this from Piranhas into the Characins Forum because pacus aren't piranhas.

It is wise to reduce your stock levels to the point where you can house fish for life - pacus certainly don't have a home in that size tank.

Props to you for asking and for taking some advice. Remember: It's not only what fish you keep, but how you keep them
