they are the burundi variety.

That's not a Burundi in your avatar. Looks like Moba or Kapampa.

Some fronts have more blue in the fins, others have a purple colored body with black stripes there's more but that a start. Google it and try to notice the difference in these: Kitumba, ikola, mpimbwe, burundi, kigoma.

can someone please list the types (is it localities), with pictures if possible.
when i mean types i mean mobas, kapampas and the rest. i'd be interested to see them all. there are obvious differences though in my opinion, joefish (i think) had a thread with a lot of different types he has kept which was really interesting. how many are there?

If you look in the article posted above, there's a link to this:
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/frontosa_variant_map.php

It describes the differences in the types of Fronts, where each is from, and has pictures.

I doubt anyone can name all the varieties. There are populations named for the particular cove they inhabit on the lake. And, since Lake Tanganyika is one of the oldest and largest lakes on the planet, that leaves alot of locales to be named after. SOme are named after the villages they're caught near. This random naming theme may have cross-overs that will require sorting out at some time.
The one's I know are strains/populations I maintain. These include six-stripe and seven-stripe (colloquially labeled Burundi), a colony of 11 adult Mpimbwe, 30+ Karilani (yellow dorsal), Black Nangu (dominant and breeding males turn completely black), Kitumba (deep bodied), Moba (blue-purple), and Bismarck (silver-blue).

H ey guys I just wanted to say I bought a breeding family of 6 purple Fronts[2 male 4 female] I have had them for like a month and they are awesome!! Quick question How much should I sell the babies for? I paid a pretty penny for them and it would be nice to get some dollars back. The store that I got them from told me that they sold the babies for 30 dollars and they would give me half. I heard from a couple of other people that because they are purple it makes them more costly. These fish are dark purple, and as soon as I fix my cord for my camera I will post pics...

well ain't easy to recognize a specific geografical variant, but you can tell from what of the main cyphos group is it.
they are 3 main groups wich are sp. north, frontosa & gibberosa.

sp north are obiously from the north part of tha lake, have a very thin eye strip and the biggest nuchal hump. this species have a hugh contrast in the black and white stripes.

frontosas are distinguished by having 7 stripes and a eye stripe thicker on the cheek area.

gibberosas are the southern variants and the easiest to tell apart because of more blue-purple on their bodies, besides that you can know they are gibberosas by taking a look on their eye stripe, wich doesn't cross over the nuchal hump, instead, it cross from eye to eye, kind like a mask.

the most common in the trade are the sp north fish and the more ''dificult''* to find are the southern gibberosas and demand a higher price specialy on f1 fishes.

*it aint dificult but couldn't find another word

sorry to say guys but there isnt a such thing as "purple" frontosas..

also if your wondering how do you tell the difference between the frontosas..go to this link..its all in the mask and color..

hope this help..but to answer your question..if your going to go with a tank of frontosas..mightest well go all out and go Zaires..(kitumbas, mobas, kapampas..)..but if you dont want to spend too much then go with the northern type..(Burundi, Kitgomas(7-stripes))...best of luck with your decision..and remember..a colony of frontosas need at least a 6foot long tank..
