How much Ammonia

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm doing it right now. One fell out of the bag. He is doing fine. I bought 5 cory cats and 5 black fin barbs. The water is going out and I'm changing the rest. I had to find something, I'm going out of town and I can 't count on my son to add ammonia.

Well , everyone made it through the night. Checked all the levels this morning and we are good to go. I am not going to move the Discus over till I have some history with this thing.

The bioload of your new fish needs to be at least as much or greater than that of your discus, otherwise, you will probably have a minicycle by the time you move your discus.

With new fish in the tank, you now have a quarantine tank. You'll have to keep them at least long enough to make sure they haven't introduced any diseases into your new tank.

Where are the nitrate tests?

I read the whole thing, first waiting for the ammonia to drop, then waiting for the nitrites to spike, then I was expecting nitrites to drop and finally nitrate test results... I was on the edge of my seat.

This was just like the Sopranos series finale.

It's not over yet. The nitrites dropped and I did a 90% waterchange. So there are no nitrates. I have to go pick up a few more fish today to put in there. It has been a trying time. I was in a big hurry to get my discus moved. Now I want to wait. Pacu Mom, you are exactly right. It is just a big quarantine tank right now. I'm going to put a few more fish in there today. I'm not sure what to buy. I want to put something in there that can stay. It's hard to catch fish in this tank. It is so deep.

It was pretty dramatic with you almost giving up and doing a change before the cycle was complete, and then Pacu Mom came in and talked you down.

It was just kind of a bummer to not see an actual nitrate reading when the nitrites hit zero. You just changed the water and added some fish.

Congrats on the fishless cycle though.
