How much do you tip your barber?

somebody help me understand...............

why in God's green earth do we tip barbers? what is the logic and reason behind that?

from what I understand, and correct me if i'm wrong, they do not get paid $2.50/hr (for example) and depend on tips like a waiter/waitress do they? just from a quick search the median pay is about $25k a year. on the low side it's about $20k and average is about $30k.

unless they to get paid lower than min wage (like the food industry model) then I get why they're tipped. it's the same bs reason why waiters get tipped

but if they don't get a lower-than-min wage hourly pay, why the hell do they get tipped?

Honestly, Cuz I like looking fresh as F---. it's like a big thank you for not Effin it up. the only other thing I would tip is a personal mechanic for the same reason. I don't feel the same about servers. Would tip the chef though

Oh and ps, mom and pop shops barbers don't get paid hourly. Ran a franchise for a few weeks. by franchise I mean master cuts and such. They get commission plus tips

Hell my barber does one per cut for free

Yeah mine does too but I've seen line ups on the price list for people who only come in for line ups. which I find odd Cuz most places I go to have waits, I can imagine waiting for a 3 minute line up

100% agree with all of this. I never go to the chain barbers. I want the local, crusty old dude who's been cutting hair since 'Nam at his own shop. If I take care of him, he'll keep me looking good. Plus, it keeps money in the community. Win-win.

so basically, half of the reason is that you want to give them extra incentive for them to do a good job, and the other half of the reason is out of fear they may do a bad job? And if you don't tip them, are they going to purposely do a bad job?

you're taking care of him by giving him business since 'nam

why is it that you guys feel you have to give extra so that he'll keep you looking good?

would it be frowned upon if he did a great job and not get tipped? if so, why?

that's his whole purpose, to get paid to keep the customers looking good

I don't know about paying the barber extra so he'll keep you looking good...it's just a gesture of appreciation I guess.

I always find, big tip or not, once they're comfy with you, they start doing crappy work. Then you gotta start nitpicking.
