I think that if your willing to spend that much for a item your not sure of and i say not sure of cause your asking others how to spend your money i would say your being reckless with your money and when people start to do that the bottom always falls out quick.....go buy it lol:screwy:

perhabs i should ask my better half ,,,first let me hide the shotgun........

I would never knowingly let myself be taken advantage of. You say the fish isnt worth the price that is being asked, but then say you think you will do it. I can translate this into several option.

1. You are bragging you have a lot of money.
2. You are bragging about a fish.
3. The fish is worth more than you realize. Nothing is worth more or less than what a person is willing to pay for it.
4. You are not good at negotiating. If you had played your hand right, the seller would not know how much you wanted the fish and how much money you have ... and wouldnt have such a high price.

I am not trying to insult you. Just letting you know how I view the situation. I used to sell expensive luxury cars, and saw this all the time. A big spender comes into the dealership bragging about how much they have and money is nothing to then ... blahblahblah. Once they decided on a car they were the biggest chumps. No negotiation skills whatsoever. They had painted themselves in a corner. They talked about what a big spender they are and now cant ask for a deal. It contradicts their ego that was thrown about to that point.

Enough rambleing. Sorry for that. Just my xp.

I think it all boils down to personal feeling for the fish.
If you feel that you can't live without it, by all means throw out $5k and live the life.
You only live once.

I'm assuming this is a platinum gator gar that you are talking about. If not I would forget about even considering the purchase as any of the other species that are regularly found as platinums would probably be eaten in time.

Also 5000 doen't sound all that bad, seen them listed for a lot more.

That is a lot of money for a fish, especially if it died shortly after the purchase..( you never know what could happen).. If you have the money to throw around like that and you can still pay your bills do what you want, it's your money.. If you have kids, I hope you atleast have a college fund put away for them, if not you might want to re-think your priorities. To me family comes first, so if I had someone close to me that was in need of cash, I would much rather help them out than buy a $5K fish. If you have enough money that it doesn't matter how much you pay or what you buy, do what you want..

I'm a little confused...if money if no obstacle, then why do you even care? Is it about the moral principle of someone over-charging you?

nah //// 5 Gs for a pet that can last you 20 years or more worth a pleasure is not such a big deal i had paid in te past close to that for orchids plants who did not survive a season Cmon now do u really think that bragging about 5 gs can make u look rich we are not even talking about a decent used car money here i just stated the fact of the deal in the thread so they ll understand where i am coming from ''' also where can u possibly get from bragging to strangers that you have no intentions of ever met in your life even if the feasibility excisted /// Some of us really do call the shots as we see them and really look at money as a commodity nothing more ,, especially if you never had to almost kill for it ,,,,,we are from different worlds your experience as a car salesman is very limited when it comes to the grand scheme of life ,,,,,,, just sayin no offense

Thanks for the lift /all i wanted was some type of acquiescence fro an other fish keeper ,,, we all know that the real fish fanatic has no limits when it comes to satisfying that crave as long as he knows that he is not alone in that pursuit its salways nice to check one"s sanity when it comes to HOBBIES

People spend vast amounts of money on all sorts of hobby stuff, I don't think fish are any different. Try getting into those remote helicopters...thousands of dollars into one, one crash and it's all gone lol.

To use a less pricey example, I once paid 150 bucks for an Amphiuma salamander (they're very hard to find in Canada). It was probably "worth" about 50 bucks, however I wanted one, had the money and was not likely to find it again (been 3 years since I've seen another for sale). I knew I was being overcharged, but had to balance that against the fact I really wanted one and wasn't likely to see them anytime soon.
