I've got an 80g, + a 40g and 30g growing fish out for the 'main tank'. I'm planning a ~220g tank soon, and I'll keep the 80g to grow up a heap of loaches, plus keep some smaller fish.

I would say as long as you can afford it and as long as you can maintain {most important} and you have good knowledge of fish keeping and are just dedicated to it.. the numbers are not an object to concern your self with.
