How much should I ask for my Flowerhorn?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had them for a month and the female is more agressive than the male. The dug out a nest and everything but the females eggtube hasn't dropped. I was thinking of trying my younger 4" female with the male but now I am getting mixed answers on the gender of it. This is her/him.

Most of the time if the female is more aggressive than the male, it doesn't really work out too good. Your male is suppose to be the dominant one. She is suppose to get his attention only. One thing you can do is separate them for quite some time, do water change, beef them up in high protein food such as raw market shrimp, frozen blood worms, night crawlers(earth worms - bait shop bought), frozen brine shrimp and etc. After both of them have gain their confidence and territorial, put the female back into the male's tank. This should get them excited into breeding.
One thing, you may notice that the pair is a lot more aggressive than usual. This is because they have been solitary for some time and gain their own confidence. Thus in return, it is generally a good idea to have a bigger and more dominant male(not overly aggressive where it only wants to kill everything in the tank that moves). Jump your water temperature higher as well, into 89-91 degrees. You can do water change every 2 - 3 days at 10% with cold water to imitate rain. This drops the pH a little and it helps soothes the fish and excite their mood in breeding. Just keep an eye on it, but don't sit there and watch them in front of their tank as it may disturb them and hell breaks loose.

I agree with this above method
but if you do this be very careful because it is possible that when these 2 fish gain thier confidence neither 1 will back down to the other and fight continuously

And freeze dried versions of the foods mentioned will pack more nutrient per gram. ie. one 3 gram earthworm vs 3 grams of fd earthworms / the fd will end up being about 15 fd worms there for 15x the protein, fd removes the moisture content and leaves nutiens in tact.

I thought freeze dried was worse? I use frozen blood worms. Also I tried venting. It's hard to tell but the fades one I'm pretty sure is male and compared to the other it's hard to tell but I think it might be female. Should I use this female in the tank of the larger pair and take out the female and put the younger one in the divider?

Where did you get your information that freeze dried packs more nutrients than non processed food or even especially fresh and disease-free live food?

Ment protein not total available nutrients. Local breeder/distributer told me and he uses freeze dried earth worms. Iv tried his method but in conjunction with wide variety of foods and noticed posotive results with one of my older females that had drastically lessened egg production with age.
