You're insane.

Comparing fish eating habits to people is silly. I have a 4 inch pike cichlid that will happily gorge itself if I keep giving it food.

and at 4 inches it should be gorging itself to get some size on it. it should be growing very fast therefore eating quite a bit.

what size tank do you have? a sump would be probably the best filtration you could get. depending on what size tank you are filtering you get an old tank someone is damn near giving away, or actually giving away. you silicone in dividers add media and get a pump that will pump a certain turnover rate (depends on bioload) at however many feet of head it is from the sump up over the side of the tank. it gives you a really clean look, you can keep your heaters in the sump also which comes in handy when you are keeping large powerful fish.

it's only a 55, oscar should be the one producing all the bioload once it grows up :D

i have an old 10g...how much is the pump to move the water to the sump and back? :D

first of all the oscar will sizewise outgrow that 55, if you plan to keep a fullgrown oscar in roughly 50 gallons of water you will definitely need a sump (it will add to the volume of the water) i have to recommend that you turn your 55 into the sump and get yourself a 75 gallon tank. or find someone to trade your 55 for a 40 breeder and get atleast a 20 long as a sump. in a 40 breeder with a 20 long sump you could keep a full grown oscar, you would need a pump that pumps somewhere around 300gph @ 4' of head, and you would need to be doing twice weekly 50% water changes or somewhere in that neighborhood for a full grown O. you would need to monitor your nitrate level quite regularly until the O's growth planes out then you should be able to set your w/c's to a schedule and only need to test around once a month.

I usually just put a half cup of dog food in my oscar's tank. For a small one, I'd say about a quarter cup of dog food.

i would hold off on the dog food until you have so many that there eating you out of house and home. then switch to dog food, it does happen to be alot cheaper per pound.

i still don't get what kinda pumps there are that lets you bring water to/from the sump tho :screwy:(never read about sumps, only saw pics of em)

reeflo aquarium pump. reeflo is a very good brand very reliable with great reviews on mfk. usually to the sump is either overflow or siphoned.
