How much $ to make salt aquarium?

Lol I think my friends mom is a bit unrealistic. She's acting like a child, want a bunch of fish that don't go together, and can't fit in a 55. Lol here's her idea XD: 2 clown fish, 1 lion fish (lol) one dog puffer (LOL) life sand, live rock and corals, and a canister filter. From what I know, lion fish aren't horribly huge, not sure about a 55 though, clowns would be fine, but the puffer (and probably lion) cant even fit with all that coral. Not to mention that the puffer will eat the clowns. I told her this and now she wants to divide her tank, dog in one side and clowns on the other.. I gotta talk her out of this, can't have a foot long fish with 2 ft of room. Anyone ever have to talk someone out of an aquarium? How'd you do it?

Just tell her the fish won't have any room to turn around. Therefore the fish won't be able to move...the width on a 55 gallon tank is only 12 inches

This is a break down of what you would need:

DIY Sump-Probably about $50-100
Live Rock-$100
Live Sand- $40
Protein Skimmer-$100-200 but is optional
Lighting-$100
Powerheads-$50
Aquarium Salt-$40 for 160 gallons
Overflow box-$50

Total will be anywhere from $530-680 but it will most likely cost $800 after all said and done.

my brother is a die-hard tightwad, and been running a 55G SW fish only & live rock for many years, lightly stocked.
It's not the prettiest, but everything works & lives for years.
If the fish are your main interest, it doesn't have to be expensive.
There's no way he would spend what I do on my FW.
I've always suspected that he still has part of the first paycheck he ever earned, & he's over 60.
No lie. LOL.
However, I couldn't tell you how he does it. I tried asking questions and he just says "You don't really need all that crap", so I'm not even sure what, exactly, the "crap" is.
;-)

I can tell you from personal experience SW Can be very expensive. It's one of those things you get so far into you'll never get your money back out of. :) Money Pit $$$$$$

Tell your friend's Mom to stay away. It's like Crack.....

But man their pretty. Side shot of my 120

I find short comments like this completely counter-productive. Thats like saying, "If you go to Walmart your going to spend alot of money!"
