How much water a day on auto drip for rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Surely wrapping 50ft of hose in the sump does the same thing.....I.e. why does the water in the pipe reach the same as the tank....cos the heat transfer from sump to pipe...therefore it is the same energy loss. I agree the water entering at the end of the pipe will probably be matched to the sump temp but it takes the heat from the sump....it's a basic radiator.

The other thing is oxygen depletion, if you want to build something anearobic you run it slowly through 50 ft of pipe.

Just my ramblings!

You say it like its a bad thing

My nitrates are at 0-5 and stay their ?? Maybe I drip to much

But, you must control the pressure side, not before the hma...the membranes need pressure to work their best.

Devotedly also do capillary flow restrictors for different flow rates...they cost pennies.

I have the flow restrictor along with a timed solenoid so I only flow 30 gals per day in a 4 hour window.
Thats the sort of thing i was looking for !! Thanks mate!

I know you need to change the cartridges but do you ever need to change the membranes like on a R.O unit?

Mines been running a couple of years and i don't know what a membrane is so havent changed one and have not encountered any problems! Every 3-4 months i check the cartridges to see how dirty /worn they are and change if needed.
I must admit though i have no idea how much water i change a day on mine, just have the tap pretty much fully open, i have more than enough heaters to keep the water warm. If it gets to freezing outside i close the tap to save on leccy.

Mine is the same as my tap water below 10ppm

5ppm is good

And Toby is right I had to think about it even if you have the water in a 50ft pipe in the sump you are still adding something cold to the tank so you will use the same amount of power

I have my thermostat probe in the main tank and the heaters in the sump if you put a pipe in the sump it would be colder than the main tank
I insulated my sump to the max with 4 x 500w heaters with no stats then connected 2 x 500w heaters to each stat
So the main tank gets cold and the heaters come on in the sump which get real hot fast if 2kw of heater comes on

Drip direct to the main tank no need for 50ft of hose in your sump thanks Toby you saved me 50ft of hose

I've done lots of research on max temp you can run through the drip or ro systems. 18 degrees is ideal filters work better and last longer ?
I had a power outage the other day my water keeps dripping and maybe drops the temp a bit but nothing to worry.
My tank is also insulated with high density styro 2" thick so it really stays warm. I've been able to run my 1800 gallon system off 2000 watts of heaters just fine.

My drip has a normally closed solenoid so if the power goes off the drip cannot run just as protection but it's good to know you dont get much of a drop Calgary, that would also help keep the filters alive with oxygenated water I guess?

Glad my science worked for you T1, I had to sit and think for a while about it too.

If I were you T1 I would hook up and evacuated tube (solar) on the tank cabin roof and circulate the antifreeze past a stainless heat exchanger and have a thermal dump for overheat, you would get to 65-80 degrees from march to october for free using just the sun, the aquatronica could be se for extra overheat protection to open the slow flow up and I have a chiller that you could add for free that would come on if the temp went over.
