Great Movie

Insulation would be a huge pain. I too would go with purchasing my own shipping container and trying to make it myself. Unless you're selling them for under 2k, I think the do it yourself would be more fun/cost efficient.

Like any potential business project; you need to tally up production costs and factor in research and development costs, hidden costs, time and loss of productivity in other areas while your doing this. This would involve making several at the very least to get realistic estimates. Once you have firm figures, work out what profit margins you need to make it worth while for you. Not everyone will be able to build a container tank themselves and even those that can cant build one as cheaply as someone who is making a few tanks. Sourcing base materials at best prices and your production methods are all part of the plan/process. Once you know what profit margin you need to make it worth your while, then reearch how much more profit the market place can hold. There is no need to cater for the lower end market if the middle and upper end market are large enough. This is all straight forward business which is probably the thing that will stop this niche project getting off the ground. I also think your asking the wrong audience since retail shops and aquarium suppliers will know the real market place better than consumers.

One thing though, the filtration model depicted shows you dont know much about large tanks or practical considerations. Its all part of the research and development process though so good luck.

sure is

you've got some nerve talking to me like that...

i wasn't talking to you....:D:ROFL:

The filtration i showed in this picture is to just show where the filtration system would go. Most like a pool sand filter would be incorporated. This is not a final design as that would be up to the customer, depending on what they wanted, fresh or saltwater, and other factors to consider. As far as making it less of an eyesore, it would easily be painted black etc and I don't envision this just being left outside on a concrete slab butting up against the house. After is is on the slab in position, you would build walls and a roof, just like your building an addition to your house. Leave space behind the tank and on one side so you can walk on the side of it and get behind it for maintenance and even plumb and have electricity back there. This isn't meant to just be left in your yard, but become part of your house, that when/if you move it can simply be put on a truck

I would like to see the final product, with fish swimming in it. You will know the cost of your material, time, money, and labor. Supposed I tell you ten grand, and you agreed to do it. And it ended up costing your over 15k because you never actually built one. Now what? I fork out the extra five grand or based on our contractual agreement, that you must finish the construction at a loss?

A final product would also serve as a more powerful marketing display tool. If I see something acutally swimming in it, I might go for it because I have an ATF shoal including two GATFs.

I agree that you should come show us the finished product first as well. An issue to think about is the ridged sides of the container when putting in your acrylic viewing windows. It would also help to figure out the best price you can sell them for while making it worth your while. As Scorp said, if you agree to do it for 10k and it costs you 15k, you're legally obligated to take the 5k loss and still provide a quality product.

uhhh it a dumpster, is that were your gonna stock all your dead fish?:grinno:

I fully understand that in this case I would have to take the 5G hit, I'm just doing some preliminary research trying to gauge how much people would realistically pay for a fully finished guaranteed product.
