all depends on if it's solid wood or not.. and what type of wood. the nicer and more solidly it was built and what I want it's function to be. If it was going to be a center peice for say my living room, or if it just needs to hold the tank. And I agree... a nice stand can make or break how a set-up looks more then almost anything else.
I must agree with MonsterMinis with his above quote. IMO, though I would use solidly built stands. Not these P.O.C. you see in stores like Petsmart, WalMart, etc. that have a tank & stand combination. I dislike stands or furniture made from particle/press board or OSB/wafer board. They just suck altogether. Regardless how you try and justify it, it just doesn't make good sense. I.M.O. I'd rather have a stand made from 9 to 11 ply plywood and a solid wood frame, than press/particle board or OSB/wafer board any day of the week.

Dont have the time or tools right now...lol
It's okay if you do not have the time and tools to DIY. There are quality grade journey and craftsman cabinet makers out there who would be willing to build one for you. Draw a thumbnail sketch of what you want your stand to look like and take it to them. Talk about what you want it to look like and the type of materials you want used. Discuss the finish. All in all you may pay up to $150 to $200 in materials, hardware & supplies. Then figure about another 35% on top of the cost of materials for labor. In the end, you'll have a great piece of furniture for your house, as well as something which will last the lifetime of the tank, if properly cared for.

ya, it does take some work and tools. luckily i had the tools already but if u had to buy them ur probably better off just spending the money for a built one
Here again, I urge you to not purchase any tank stands made of press/particle board, or OSB/wafer board. When you purchase one from say Petsmart, as an example, the store recieves them in kit form, made of press/particle board mostly. I have seen some furniture pieces made of OSB (Oriented Strand Board) a.k.a. wafer board.
When the retail outlet store recieves these stands, the stands come in kit form from the manufacturer. Then, an employee from the store assembles them. Once they are ssembled, they go to the store floor to be sold with the tanks.
Particle board is brittle, it breaks easily. When it gets wet, regardless of the amount of water, it swells up and expands as it dries, thus making the particle board weaker. Wafer board does the exact same thing. Eventually over time, the particle board will fatigue and fail. Hence a destroyed tank, and an expensive investment lost.
Don't be fooled by the weight or the solid feel of the stand either. Particle board is heavy. Too heavy in my opinion for it to be used for furniture in a house, especially for a tank stand. It's the amount of glue they used to keep the wood particles glued together that causes the majority of the weight. A good solid frame with nominal pieces of wood and the use of good sound 7 to 9 ply vernier plywood 3/8 to 7/16 inch thick will do a much better job in making a structurally sound and safe tank stand. If you choose to make it out of just 3/4 or 7/8 inch plywood, that would be a do-able thing as well. If you do, be sure that you have it made somewhere between 7 to 11 ply plywood. The more number of ply's in the plywood, the stronger the plywood is. I.M.O. plywood would be much more sturdier than using particle board and weigh much less than particle board or wafer board of the same thickness and dimensions. The only reason I see as to why a manufacturer uses particle board, is that it's less cost to the manufacturer to produce the particle board kits, for tank stands and furniture.
I hope this helps in your decission making process for your stand.
