Heck last auction we had two guys having a bid war over yellow labs... 30$ for 6... They did this on a lot of africans. These same fish weren't even selling at 1 dollar a bag the auction before. (IE no sells.) You just never know what will happen.
I got $15 once for a bag of watersprite. I expressed tagged it and it was one of the first plants up for auction at a workshop thtat had a plant speaker.
Sadly, the hobby is shrinking (according to statistics such as tanks purchased, etc).. So that means less new diehards coming into the hobby and to events. Thus, it has really become a buyer's market, IMO. I went to an auction about 2 years ago, and I could not believe the deals.
I remember buying:
Bag of 7 Red Zebras, 3" long.. $1
3 Ps Acei, in a 5 gallon bucket, probably about 6" long .. $3
Bags of livebearers ... $1.. (ok, this isn't so uncommon).
And this wasn't at the end of the auction either, I only stayed for the first 4 hours, because I had all the fish I could handle..
Anyhow, seeing stuff like this just reinforces (at least in my area) that you are better off just giving the fish away and making someone really happy, as opposed to trying to get a little money..
Although I agree with you, at a large event like an ACA auction, you could probably do pretty well..
