How not to move an 18" aro...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Seriously!? I'm a noob at this stuff, and I know NEVER to move that type of fish like that. *pukes*... Gorgeous fish tho, super surprised that it made it that big. Gar!

You are indeed a noob...that is exactly how to move a decent sized arowana. Or with a pillowcase...the guys only issue was the bag wasn't strong enough.

a vid made by a bunch of retards. just go to a sporting goods store, get a big nylon fish net (not the crappy ones sold at the lfs) and net the animal and put into the bucket. cripes, even ebay has those sort of nets. no need for a bag of any sort.

plus petting the animal takes of the slime coating. thats not good either i think.

Okay...so you think that scooping the fish in a net doesn't remove the slimecoat? A bag is always how you move big arowanas...

I moved mine last week with just my hands (and a drained tank) and he is fine. That healthy aro should be fine.

A bigger bag would've been a better idea in my opinion, but I understand what he's trying to do. I've helped my neighbour move over twenty 14" - 28" koi. My lord the worst day of my life. Waist deep in water trying to catch them was impossible. We didn't want to damage them with a huge net, so we herded them into our arms, and lifted them out, and my lord were they heavy and I doubt a Aro is any lighter.

What doesnt kill our fish makes us smarter! Bet the guys does a much better job next time. His water quality looks to be better than a lot of youtube vid so my thought is he know a bit but just learned a new lesson if fishkeeping. Also have to say I love the old shirt method, even used a tablecloth on a pacu once.

LOL thats actually pretty funny. the camera lady ran away. but oh well read the caption on youtube, it says they are moving it to a 7000 gallon tank. so this isnt that bad compared to a huge aro living in a tiny tank for its life
Credit to the guy for moving it into a 7k tank but holy crap, how long was it in that thing??
And btw, a short-handled fishing net, like the ones used by wade and surf fishermen, are good for moving fish IMO. I use one with my Sen

I second the motion. The level of stupidity was mind boggling.

I wouldn't expect that sort of response from you chompers. You seem a smart enough fellow to know that learning to do something right often involves messing it up once or twice first.

There may have been a better way to move this fish, but there's nothing wrong with what he was *trying* to do. Would you guys (not just Chompers) be up on a soapbox calling this guy an idiot if the move had gone smoothly? Probably not.

Using a net has several problems all it's own, unless you get a special fine mesh net, and those are quite difficult to find.

Wow thats crazy.. In a way he actully did ok. If he used a stronger bag he would have been fine. He could have just use a towel to transport Mary the silver arowana.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN
