How often do bichir poop??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My endli bichir is 12-13 inhes
I feed once or twice a day, sometimes less if we're busy.
I'd still do water changes but I've been looking into adding a pothos plant in a shower caddy to my tank. Kind of hard right now since we're in snow, ha.
I don't do near enough water changes as it is and somehow keep nitrate/nitrites at zero anyhow.

My guys all eat massivore soaked in bloodworm juice and garlic. I supplement with freeze dried krill. Haven't bought talapia for them yet, but I will soon enough. I actually had an issue with nitrates staying at 0. Some of my plants were browning and losing leaves. With heavy amounts of plants you actually want them to be anywhere from 5-30 at any given time. Its a strange problem to have.

What did your wisteria look like when it was dying? What kind of lighting do you use?

I would also agree, that water changes are a must esp. in monster tanks. Ammonia and nitrites should NEVER exceed 0 ppm and nitrates should be 20ppm or less. Evaporation does not get rid of any chemicals, it only gets rid of water, which means all the harmful stuff you want out is still in the tank, all your doing is adding more water... It also gets rid of uneeded nutrients and then replaces them when you fill it back up by doing water changes.

On my 180 gallon i have some pothos in the back and java fern around, but i always do my weekly water changes and they are a bit excessive but i like a clean tank, i do 40-75% water changes to make sure my water is excellent. The tank isnt even that stocked at this time but i have fish that like clean water and are still growing, and see how they are still growing... pristine water benefits greatly to fish growth when they are younger not really the size of the tank its the ammonia build up and deteriorating water quality.

On that note i havent notice how much my bichirs poop honestly lol i feed my babies once a day a hefty serving of shrimp and bloodworms and on some days new life spectrum pellets.

the production/secretion of hormones is all true. Other reasons to do water changes is to replenish the micro and macro nutrients in the water column that fish need to function "optimally".

How often do you guys reccomend that I do a waterchange given that my params are always at the perfect level? What are the micro/macro nutrients I need to be concerned with? What about the hormones? Everyone seems very healthy, and the tank activity is relatively high considering the species I keep.

You can continue your schedule the same if you say it is working out for you. Again, you have a low bioload, so you can get away with less volume change during your water changes. Personally even with a low bioload, I'd do 1x WC at 50%-65%.

By perfect params you mean ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates? Those are basic parameters. There are other things to consider some of which have been mentioned already. Ever wonder why a group of fish will grow much faster for one fish keeper than another -- everything staying at a constant? Aside from amount of food/quality of food, level of stress, water parameters (beyond the basic three), size of tank, etc..... if you want fast growth, WC's are key.

to op, once/day is more than enough for your 12-13" bichir. If it's tummy is still bulgy next day, just skip a day here and there.

Yeah, if shes got a belly bump I don't even try to feed her.
Shes uninterested if shes full.

I ask because im just startig to notice a steady amount of poop, ha.
She was on all feeder fish (previous owners)and now ive gotten her to eat a little tilapia and silversides.
Hikari is sending me a massivore sample to try to get her to eat that.

NICE!!

I wouldnt worry about it. Ive never seen my bichirs poop and ive had some of them for 4 years.

I do about 75% per week on my 180. To get bigger fish you need to trick them into thinking they are in a larger body of water. This is done by diluting the fish's hormones during a WC.
