What do you guys clean them out with... Tap water?
I just cleaned out my sump n didn't realize till it was to late that I rinsed my media with Tap... I think I killed my BB cause I had a rough few days with Params. Don't know what I was thinking Lol.
Back to my Q... I use tank water to rinse my FX5 stuff out every 2-3 months :D

I would say it wasn`t the tap water that caused your mini cycle.
Just an aggressive handling of the media can do more than the small amount of damage tap water can.
This whole tank water for cleaning only is an aquaria myth that just goes on and on.
The amount of chlorine/chloramines needed to kill off your BB with just a rinse would make the water undrinkable.
Many will disagree, but I can live with that.

every 3 to 6 months actually going to clean one tomorow (thanks for reminder its been a while) and wait a week befor i do the other as not to kill of all or to much BB at once.

thats one dirty fx5 in those pics if i give mine a slight bump or shake and it starts spitting crap out i know its time for a cleaning soon

I service my mechanical filters weekly.
The waste may be out of site in your canister but it is still in the water column.
Curiosity question: Is it healthy for your fish to be exposed to decomposing waste for weeks and months ?
My filters will function longer than 7 days but I couldn't imagine leaving all that crap in there for so long.
I feel bad if I forget and go 10 days. :(

Lord Jesus.... damn.... that is dirty. Ever since I stopped using the polishing pads... I haven't cleaned my FX5 in about 3 months, the flow is just as strong. When I was using the pads, I would clean the FX5 ever week. But I do clean the 305 and AC110 about every month and they are dirty but no where near that below.

i dont think its that harmfull i know thier are hundreds of thousends if not millions of gallong moving through thier native rivers but even thier they must encounter some type of waste from other fish it depends how your filtration is setup and just how much is broken up by the beneficial bacteria befor entering the tank once again however its up to us to make sure its not excessive and the pic obove is just really excessive must have been years in an overcrowded tank

You miss the fact, that in nature, water is not re-circulating in a closed system.
Evaporation into rain/snow and then through the river system.
Aquariums are closed systems, just like the great Salt Lake or the Dead Sea.

What kind of media do everyone use for the canisters and how long can u use the media for? Pads replace everytime it gets poop looking of course.
