How often do you guys wash filters?

+1 on the rotation.

I used that link to describe DOC's. I also run a drip that changes 30% volume daily, so I agree the water changes will be the most effective way to reduce the waste in a system, but sweeping 20% under the rug it still what it is. Run a skimmer on a reef system and you'll "see" what you often don't. But if you don't "clean" your filters for a year, then how could you possibly know that it's clean or not? 20ppm shows that there is something still in there. If 20ppm is good for you, then so be it. I prefer to shoot for as close to zero as possible ....

and I keep a large female jag solo in a 90 and feel I'm at my stocking limit. Opinions will vary. I really mean no offense when I posted the original post but new keepers often get into trouble by thinking they can go months, or often years without doing maintenance and be fine, usually based on threads like this. I can go 3 months without doing water changes and never hitting 20ppm N03 on one of our systems, but would advise against it for a number of reasons.

Bottom line? clean your filters regularly and you'll have healthy fish. Im sure your jag is fine at 20ppm, but a new keeper may get the wrong message.

I do know the benefits of a skimmer and their worth in our hobby. But as water changes on fresh water tanks are so cheap fast and easy that theres no need for a skimmer. Salt water tanks basically need it to "catch" all the organic matter before polluting the tank water with nitrates. But with a simple water change it basically does the same thing by removing the organic matter. Salt water fish are more sensitive to nitrates as many species die past 15 ppm so constant water changes aren't ideal so a skimmer is needed.

I also keep my jag separate but even the 20% is minimal as the probiotics I add aid in the consumption nearly of all the gunk.

Lets keep the conversation civil people, now that this is on the radar.

well done... person is a person.. can't change the way they act or do... at the end just as i have put it.. happy Monster Fish keeping..

As long as your fish arent dying!

I don't find this amusing! I expect French toast, bacon and oj everyday I wake at noon!

Lets keep the conversation civil people, now that this is on the radar.

That's right everyone not washing filters 2-3x per year gets banned...! Jk! :P

So because of this talk about "nitrate bomb" I opened my 405 today to see how much of a nitrate bomb it really is. This filter hasn't been cleaned in over a year.

This is my inlet
Edit inlet picture didnt show.

The two bags have purigen inside of them.

Bucket of waste

Didnt even cloud my pond, and off to the left is a ice sheet lol.

So my canister that wasn't cleaned for a year was NOT a nitrate "bomb". Use some probiotics after a water change, and set up a canister however you want. To clean every month of once a year.

@Danielcho
the point was that people post "generally good husbandry practices" in threads, so that newbs aren't led to deadly disasters.
You manage your tank far differently than most people: you have high intakes to deliberately NOT have filters suck up detritus chunks & you vacc out all fish crap, have low level feeding habits, use ridx (which is a relatively recent feature to most who do it at all), plus you perform Lg frequent water changes. and I never saw you previously say that you also use purigen.

Most keepers depend on filters to do nearly all mechanical removal ! with the exception of vaccing substrate, most over feed, and I think most add no extra biological products...the degrees vary, but seriously> you must know darn well, that all makes a gigantic difference in what advice is best in a public forum.

Your filter looks cleaner than mine (altho mine is good), but that is after I began a regime of ridx. SO clean, I wondered how the BB was even working on my tank- much less Better Than Ever.
One caveat to others: rinse filters before starting ridx, because first it breaks stuff up & loose. That's not a good idea to just jump right in to if your filter has much sludge.

@Danielcho again,

If ALL your fish crap was going into the can from a bare bottom tank (nowhere else to go) with a high suction intake- do you think your canister would look like that inside after this many months?
