I am pretty obssesed with ammonia testing when dealing with a cycled new system. I have found out, after reading a JK47 thread, that bottom water rarely shows no ammonia in a bottom inlet/top outlet setup.

So I test all level of water while playing with outlets placement until I find the perfect fit. Then I only test when something is new (fish; substrate; filter cleaning)

How often do we get to make another one of this same thread?

How often do you give useless replies to threads? Daily

I never test water unless one of my fish is acting different. Which hasn't happened in over a year and I always use established media in all new tanks. So it's honestly been over a yr since i tested water

Here are the three things I believe in totally

1.) acclimating fish
2.) plenty of bio media
3.) water changes

If you do those things on a consistent basis, you have very little problems as long as you purchase healthy fish

Definitely not a useless reply. The last thread had a plethora of useful information that will likely not be made up for in this thread. This thread will show up first in searches and will be seen before the old thread....Consider that information gone to all but those who do the most thorough searches.

I may not be a social butterfly, but I do have quite a bit of useful knowledge....I really get tired of posting the same answers over and over for people who do not care to listen, though. Thank you for your reply, but I think you have mistaken me for someone who values your opinion....We are all friends here, though.

I test my water when I "feel" like I should. After changing something. When I see more algae growth than normal. When a fish is acting funny. Before and then a few days after cleaning a filter (Still enough of a Newb to like to see the effects of a filter cleaning).

I experiment with different filtration setups and test the water to see what works best.

+1

I would had :
4) circulation pattern in a tank (a factor that is always underestimate)

when i have my new tank set-up..i monitor the parameter like hawk..the reason is i do not cyle the tank the long dreaded way. i keep monitoring till it stable and to established sweet spot for WC. i check the parameters when i feel like to and if o got nothing better to do just to confirm the numbers i already expect..
so i voted on "other"
