I only do 20-30% weekly I think 50% is overkill and is a waste of water unless your testing and it needs it.
I agree I still have... crystal clear water.

The guy I just bought my 110 from told me he only did water changes every 4 weeks, about 40%. It has a canister filter and his tank looked crystal clear and clear. Obviously I cant speak on the health of the fish but they all looked fine.

One very important point that some of our less experienced members may want to make note of, crystal clear water is only that: visibly clear. That doesn't necessarily mean that it's free of contaminants. You can have crystal clear water that is very toxic. 99% of the time the things that make your water cloudy are suspended particulate. These small particles can be removed with a micron filter or some other type of polishing filter. Those filters alone do not remove the invisible contaminants like nitrite, ammonia, etc.

Very good point to bring up. Several tanks also utilize black water, which looks like your fish are swimming through tea. It is far from clear, but can be a very healthy tank.

Absolutely! I can't remember who it was, but there was a member that posted some awesome pics of his blackwater tank that he created by submerging dead leaves. The water leeches tannins out of the dead, organic materials, like leaves, turning your water anywhere from light yellow to chocolate pudding brown. Very healthy for fish from soft, acidic waters though!

I run my 450 on a drip system. Changes approx. 50g a day, so like 12% a day?

Instead of guessing we could probably do a nitrate test then do a w/c at a particular level...
We could spend more money on mechanical filters to remove the crap out of the substrate...
and the list goes on...
Personally I love keeping fish, but the maintainance is the sucky part of the hobby...
So for all practical purposes, 30% weekly, on our properly filtered, overstocked, much loved, tanks seems to be the norm...
