How overstocked would this set-up be???? 125gal

Would adding one or two sponge filters help with the extra load? Or do I mainly need more mechanical filtration?

My tinfoils are all 12-13" except the new guy 3".

The tank stays clear and my fish are all healthy.

I don't overfeed and I do keep up with water changes.

I personally don't think my tank is currently overstocked :)

if the water is clear, and your ammonia and nitrite levels are zero, then it isn't

but...the new tinfoil still has to grow up and you are planning on adding more fish..so..

its going to be overstocked in the future :)

I would add a second canister for sure. I run twin Rena XP3's and an AquaClear 110 on my 150. all in preperation from when my fish get BIG..

How high do your nitrates get between waterchanges?

If you don't have any ammonia or nitrite right now, then you have adequate biofiltration.
More would be a good idea though; another canister would work well.

I don't check my levels :(

My 404 is loaded up (all trays) with bio filtration....

The 4 tinfoils, jack dempsey, green severum have been full grown in this tank for a couple years, so I figure the levels are ok?

Would a couple sponge filters help with the extra load???

I like the $ of the sponge compared to another canister.

I'm going to be buying my brothers xp2! So I will have the 404, xp2, and I added a sponge filter.
Should this get me up to par? My water stays clear with the 404 so I figure the addition of the xp2 will take care of any problems once I add the other fish.

well how many gph are the filters pushing cuz it doesnt matter wat its reated but if its not pushing 10x the gallons of water in ur tank with a simi over stocked tank u dont have good enough filteration on my 55 gallon im pushing around 1,500 gph any my tank is barely even stocked...... u should aim for 1,500 gph at the very least on ur tank.......

Well, I would not be comfortable with that little filtration on a 125G

I have a 125G with 4 Fluval 405 and its overstocked with Malawis... no probs with the water...

mm

My setup right now is just the 404 and it has been like this for 4 years and my fish are fine.......guess I'm just lucky :)

adding more filters won't help that much

because I think even with the filtration you have, its likely that your ammonia and nitrites will remain zero

the problem is going to be keeping the nitrates from rising to a critical level (and perhaps pH drop via all the fish waste/TDS aka old tank syndrome)

what you are going to have to do is lots of water changes. that will be the biggest help if you still decide to add the extra fish.

because more fish means more waste, which means your going to have to change more water to keep good water quality.

remember, an aquarium is a closed system - the wastes are excreted, go into the filter/gravel and stay there. most is broken down into nitrates, but that has to be actively removed via water changes.

you could have 10 filters on the tank and it still won't remove the nitrates.

yes, nitrates normally are not that bad. however, with a tank that size with that many big messy fish, its going to be an issue for sure.
