How red does a normal red get?

not sure about the market over there, but usually larger asian arowana tend to be more difficult to sell, especially a large banjar red (i'm assuming you're referring to the 1.5 grade) due to its somewhat bland colour in comparison to the super reds, and their size and price. another thing with reds, that i've seen at least, is that their colouration and such varies alot depending on the breeder, parents, the food, the environment, lighting, etcetc. the same 24"+ chili reds can vary from deep purple-reds to a shallow silver colour with little red on the tips depending on these factors. RTGs on the other hand, i have never seen one over 18" that turned out "ugly", only a difference of how red their tails are, or which column their gold creeps up to.

Any large asian arowana is fairly easy to sell you know what you are getting especially with the sr's and goldens

I can buy RTGs like this, I can buy Xbacks but my point is RTGs like this are creeping out of my price range. "save a little more" i hear you think, but i may as well save for a super red if i'm gonig to save and i don't want the responcability of a 1000$US dollar fish for a first fish.
I'm leaning to the normal red. i will be able to trade it in the future if it's chipped.

Just get the normal red and raise it to see how it works out. I wouldn't try your hand with a $1,000.00 fish when you are coming from 10g tanks. It will be just as spectacular of a fish, they are awesome no matter what color. I bet if you keep it a year you'll not even want to sell it, you'll want to keep it and just get another. Like many fish, good diet and lighting will really enhance colors as well.

^ you're the man!
you sound just like my wife! Sensible!

If you only want a Pratice Arowana, why not just buy a plain old Silver Arowana. They are the same difficulty as Asian Arowanas.

Selling a quality Adult Asian Arowana at a profit price over here is pretty hard already, so selling an adult 1.5 Red at a good price is nearly impossible. So, you might not want to hear it, but saving a bit more for an RTG is worth it. Personally, I find adult Second Grade Reds ugly as hell.

If i do get a normal red i know about diet, but what about lighting? At the moment my tank is running with 2 soft white tubes, would changeing one to red help with colour. I'm aslo going to have some bog wood with a few harddy plants attached so I need to take this into consideration.
