I have been keeping fish for over 45 years. More fish have died premature deaths in my hands than most anyone on this forum. What does that make me?

A troll

This hobby has been around for years and I think there is more we don't know than we do know. Experts are very rare IMO.

i been keeping fish for a very long time and even though i know alot i still consider myself an average guy when it comes to fish keeping. I am always learning new thing about this hobby :)

I chose knowledgable fish keeper. Though I feel I know a lot about this hobby there are areas that I don't know all that much. It's through resources like this forum that we all expand our knowledge.

I voted Master Fish Keeper.

As are many who do not even know it for this reason. A master does not only consistently and constantly learn from others, they are also a master for this one reason.

They create ways of doing things that are unique to them. Ways that others can learn from.

I also voted as I did because I have been able to successfully get my columbian sharks to breed and brood eggs which I presently have in 3 seperate holding patterns in an attempt to get fry from the deal. As well my 2nd female is very close to laying eggs which is also why I stripped the male.

One other quality that a master must have is they do not look down on others for that in turn brings them down.

The only reason I voted the way I did- master in trianing - was because I feel like I'm investing way more money and time and learning more now than ever and loosing comparatively little fish to most people I know. I'm also beginning to breed on a notable scale and that feels like it elevates you above that average successful platy breeder. I would say probably 1/2 of fish hobbiests hold themselves to such a low standard their fish suffer, even on this website. I don't think they realize it though, its something where you are always improving as your standards are rising too. And if they stick with the hobby they will eventually move up not just in understanding but their actually practices. I know I used to restock my 55 gallon ever 6 months from die offs. Now I loose maybe 5 fish a year with keeping over 100 fish simultaneously. For someone who predominantly keeps cichlids that isn't bad. I hope to improve on that survival rate even further as I plan on redesigning my entire setup after I move.

Agreed. I think that while masters are rare the most common plateau we reach is often the limitation of resources. All fish keepers suffer the buy now figure it out later illness even the ones who try and best suppress that urge. We want what we can't have and our animals pay for it. I'm fortunate that I now have the space and resources to have more than 2 tanks and I'm finding that with this expansion I've seen and learned things I couldn't before. This has expand my understanding and my capability to deliver good care to my fish and the fish I would aspire to keep in the future. I think a master in training is a good place to be and I hope to be there a while because even while being there I can still ask questions every day on here.

Wow, looking at the pole results lot of people here really think highly of themselves.

Well I guess they are experts on what they know.

With more votes it is actually starting to become somewhat of a bell curve so for the choices that were given it seem to be accurate.

I would whole heartedly disagree with you in the strongest of terms possible.

There is a huge issue when people use such all encompassing phraseology.

Personally I have 13 tanks running most over 100 g. And I know without a doubt that many others here would not fit your broad brush statement.

Some of us are not at the behest of whim and spur of the moment emotions in our animal purchases.

Mayhap and perhaps there are some of us who put forthought and foresight into what we are doing with this hobby. Further, perhaps there are those for whom this is not a hobby but a passion and a career of sorts which necessitates that environments and enclosures be the best that can be obtained for those in our care.
