How tall a stand is too tall?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
on my 225g i build the stand at 32". the tank is another 32". plus i have 8" of hood on top of that. i'm 6'2" and it's at a good height when i'm standing or sitting. i sat on my couch and eyed the wall to find a height that would be enjoyable to all in my family room, then measured where i thought was good and build it.

i have no "top heavy" issues, just a pain to get to the bottom... any 32" tank is though.

also... figure out what's going under it. right now i have 3 canister filters, but soon plan on installing a 55g sump in there, so i went for extra space!

I built a 38" tall stand for my 110. The top of the tank sits about 64" from the ground. I built it to hold a 27" TV and VCR. I had to retire it because I bought a plasma.

I used 16 2x4s glued and screwed together in pairs for vertical support.

I'd take some pics for you, but it's sitting empty in my storage shed behind a bunch of junk.

Guys, this has been incredibly helpful. Thanks for all the responses and pictures. I will post progress pics once the project is underway.

My 240 has a 42" high stand. It makes the tank look a lot bigger than it is. The stand is super heavy ( 300+lbs) so I don't have any stability issues, but I guess at some point, extra height may pose a problem for narrower tanks. I need a step ladder to reach into the tank, but IMO the visual effect is worth the extra work.

I built my 80g stand pretty low (24") since I wanted to be able to get inside of it easily to clean, and because I have it on carpet, I wanted the weight to be lower to the ground to keep it more stable.

I bought my 220 with a 66" stand. It was amazing. I cut it down to 3 feet, and looking back shoulda make it 40-42" i HATE looking down into tanks, I much prefer eye level. It was made with single layer 2x6"s and lag bolts, pretty sturdy.

So this put the top of the tank at 7.5 to 8 feet:confused:

I have a 6 foot 150g tank (29.5" tall) that sits 29" off the ground (the stand is 28" tall plus 1 inch for the maplewood feet I made) and its great.

looks good just standing in front of it. looks eve better sitting (which is what the pic view shows). top of the tank sits roughly 5 feet up (about 60").

make it so that the top of the tank is armpit high.. this has got to be the greatest choice i have ever made..

I think it depends entirely on the level of the viewer. I once saw a great 400ish gallon coffee table that was 2" off the floor. If its going in a living room/parlor/den where people come in and sit, then the middle of the tank should be about 4' (or whatever eyeball height is when sitting)

If its going in a kitchen or entryway or game-room where people will primarily be standing and/or sitting on bar stools, then the center of the tank should be 5'6" (again with the "where the average eyeball is").

I'm not sure there is such a thing as too tall, just too tall for that spot.
