Friday I was putting a new circuit into a panel, nothing new. We normally do stuff energized, its just the way we roll. The only difference was this panel was made back in the 60's or 70's, so it wasn't exactly the most efficient. Instead of the hots being up at the top of the panel, they were on either side of the breakers, right next to the ground/neutral bar.

I was hooking in the neutral when BLAMO!!! My screwdriver barely touched the line side bolt, while I was screwing in the neutral. Instant sparks, BRIGHT light, and LOUD noise! Not to mention scaring the crap outa me. Sounded like a shotgun, my ears were ringing for about two hours, haha. Tripped out a double 100amp breaker, not exactly something easy to do. Anyway, it blew a hole through my ten in one and jacked up the flathead on it. Fun times!!

Wow, that is awesome. It is also the main reason I will not touch anything other than the breakers haha.

well thats an easy way to make a hole. I found another easy way once when i was out rabbit hunting. Gun jammed and i took it inside because it was freezing and i unjammed the 20 gauge shell, accidentally hit the trigger and BAM hole went right through a new drill, drillcase and partially through a wall.

did something similar before.... its better than coffe for waking you up...

I seen my dad melt the plastic handle on one once scare the s**t out of the whole house.

Wow, new screwdriver time?

I had something similar happen to me once. I was trying to jump start my car in a dark parking lot, and I kinda made contact with the strut bar instead of the battery terminal.

Most of the time when we do it its pretty much a waste of time to shut off the power or something since its over so quick. Most of the time there aren't any problems. This was a crappy panel though, so we probably should have shut it off, but just didn't. Luckily noone was hurt.
