Not much to add in regards to catching them that hasn't already been said, but just a quick story in regards to a lesson learned:
For those of you with acrylic tanks, be careful with what type of net you are using. When I was trying to catch some balas out of my old 240G (that I had just polished to perfection) I was using an old net with a rusty metal ring. As I was trapping the fish against the wall of the tank with the net, I realized that the rusty ring of the net had scratched the acrylic up pretty good. Doh!
I can relate to the 3ft front to back being a problem. My 3ft cube-ish tank is a pain to catch anything.
I find patience and a slow and steady approach is best. No need to lower the waterline for me. Two nets is good and as is lights out time. It's certainly easier to catch larger cichlids though the small ones just dissapear from me.
