How to catch fish in LARGE tanks with decor? At night?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My tank is only a third of yours, though had the same problem catching clown loaches. Set up some nets into strategic places and then chase the fish into the nets.

I do it all the time in 8 footer. I do it at the fill point of a water change. Sometimes I just pull the wood but sometimes reducing the water volume in half foes the trick. 35 years of practice doesn't hurt either.

My thank is more a less half yours (2.520 liters - ~700g if I´m not mistaken) and it´s already very complicated to catch a fish.
I use big nets and the "strategy" depends on where the fish sleeps: if it uses an area of easy access, I do it at night after lights out; if it sleeps ""deep undercover" I have to chase them during the day....

Try a divider keep all the fish down one end and take decorations out of your way then out with the nets lol good luck with catching them ha

Sometimes I use towels (regular sized bath towels that I only use for fish) to isolate areas of the tank or block off parts. Its not perfect and they are tough keep in place underwater especially if there is strong current, but I think it would help just to even eliminate some of their escape routes away from the net. For my big fish I usually hand catch them or use the towel to scoop them up, but that's probably not the best idea for moving discus especially with rays in the tank. Good Luck
