How to feed Earthworms?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can put them in damp corn meal for a day. Then it gets dirt out. Or you can just squeeze it out right before you throw in the tank

I feed whole medium to large worms to my bigger fish. Just run them under the tap to wash excess soil off and throw them in your tank. For smaller fish i chop them up with scissors real fine in the bottom of a bowl. Obviously this way is messy as the dirt and guts is all mixed in with the chopped worm. If you don't want the dirt and guts in your tank just slowly fill the bowl up with water and when its full tilt and swill the worm around as the water is filling the bowl. With practice you can easily float off the light dirt and guts and be left with a load of just finely chopped worm meat in the bottom of your bowl. There is a knack to it though but once you've mastered it its the only way to feed finely chopped worm without messing your tank water up.

Perfect Thanks everyone! As one asked the eel is 13", just got it two days ago. It already eats krill but want to vary its diet while its still in quarantine. I just tried a cut worm but no go, ill keep trying!

I agree with dogofwar, red wigglers are the way to go; easy to culture and they taste great(said the catfish). Although earthworms are larger, compost worms are easier to gut load. I usually feed mine mostly water plants that grow out of control like azolla, salvinia and hyacinth.

He should take them fairly easily, in fact all my eels have loved all types of worms. Try a living one.

I second the composting idea, free fish food (and bait) any size you want (once red wigglers start laying eggs.) Small ones go to my indian mudskipper which are no bigger than 3 inches, and large ones to tilapia, e-catfish, and peacock bass (just to give you a size range.) Just make sure you put dried grass or newspaper on the top layer to avoid swarms of fruit flies, unless you want the fruit fly maggots which our tilapia fry love. plus free wormcastings if you garden
