While I would recommend a carpet as a decent beginner snake, I wouldn't recommend a blood python until you've had snakes for a few years. They're not especially difficult to keep, but I feel they require more of an ability to read a snake's many nuances in order to keep them happy and healthy.

May I recommend the corn snake? It's not the most popular first snake for no reason.

I have handled and been around snakes for many years, so I know how to read most snakes.

I would rather shy away from Rats Corns Kings and Balls/Royals.

Yea, they are the closest living relative, but they are definetly not the same.

Yes, but you said you didnt like the look of carpets. Basically theyre just green carpets. The body and head shape are very similar.

Although the captive care for both are worlds apart... Personally, I myself would try my hand at carpets for a few years as a 'primer' to prepare myself for a chondro, and possibly and ATB as well to get used to an aggresive snake attitude on a hardier (and less expensive) snake. Sorta like keeping a ball before a boa and a boa before a burm.

Well GTP's arent just GREEN Carpets. The locales range in so many different colors, and they just arent the same.

Yeah I know. But there are c alled GREEN tree pythons. I just didnt feel like typing out every single color they come in... White, blue, orange, yellow, black, turquoise, and who knows how many shades of green. And not to mention the patterns.

How does Boa constrictor come before Ball? I think they are terrible starter boids, and in my opinion, the only thing they are good for is attracting girls. Boas are more handable than Ball Pythons, a lot less secretive, are more willing to come out during the day, respond to people better, they come in different sizes, they are easier to take care of, easier to breed, and so on.

You can tell I don't like Ball Pythons.

Mind you, not all Carpet Pythons are arboreal in personality. One of the guys I talked to said his Jungle Carpet is always on the ground. :screwy:

If you really want an arboreal species, research all the arboreal and semi-arboreal species out there and pick the one you like the most with relative hardiness.

I know it's just an example; I am just toying with you.

What exactly are you asking? I said balls before boas (not boas before balls, you really didnt make sense) because they are simply smaller and easier. Theyre definately not the BEST pet snake, but *CB* ones are rediculously easy to care for (and I'm baffled as to why so many are abused) and are a good starter snake for someone who plants to have more species.

They're abused because they're so cheap and easy to come by that pretty much everyone who wants a pet snake just because it's "cool" is going to get one.

And I think he meant to ask
"How does ball come before Boa constrictor?"

Eh... yeah.

Sorry!

There's so many boa locales that are calm and rarely exceed 4'-5'.

so they aren't anything like the other carpets then. That and they are much smaller, and their head shape differs between locales let alone between the species of the carpets...

To answer original question, what is your dads view on snakes? Does he know anything about them? I had to explain that not all snakes were about to kill me either via venom or "crushing every bone in my body" via constriction. Then explained the size of whatever snake, and the ease of cares. Do you have any friends or family with snakes? I change peoples perception of snakes all the time when I can show them what they are really like. You have people who grimace and are frightened and by the end of it they are smooth and silky, "friendly" and interesting. Of course that might differ depending on what species you use.

His view? To him they are portrayed as evil demonic creatures.
