how to introduce a new fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok guys thanks. well the peace didnt last long with the texas in with the "less aggresive" cichlids so again, more changes. i decided to throw the smaller less aggresive cichlids into the 60gal together and moved the jd, fh, texas, and oscar into the 100g and removed all decors therefore no one has territory. im going to keep them together in the 100g for a day or 2 until they get comfortable and see how they do with each other. oh yea the jd, texas, oscar, fh are all roughly the same size at 4".

u live and learn.. I've had fish were i lost it in 1 to 2 days.. some rare too.. :(
Its the risk of the hobby...

But like i said.. your stock is too full.. u can't introduce too much..... I would just focus on two or three groups of cichlid and have enough room so they dont kill each other..

Dividers would work.. but it doesnt really look nice in a tank..

just put alot of decorations and turn the lights off feed on one side of the tank and put the texas on the other when they see the fish they dont really think much of them

A few people in this post have used dividers, i swear by this method. I put a new fish on the peaceful side of the divider on their own & leave them there sometimes up to 4-5 weeks, all the time doing weekly waterchanges & maintance etc, then when i think there ready, i remove the divider while doing a waterchange, so while the fish are running around madly they dont realise the barrier is gone.
By that time all the chest beating has been done and they seem to just get on with it.
Try this method 'x3' i've had great success & hav'nt lost any fish since. good luck.

I've done method on occassion, and it does tend to work, except I feel it works best with fish that are juvenile, not with adult established fish

i lost 11 christmas cichlids to 2 electric yellow trying to get them to play nice. sometimes its just not in the cards, jd is pretty fish but there instigators in my experience, i hope you can get this combo to work for you.

Well I removed the problem which was the female jd. Now I just have the texas, oscar, and flowerhorn together in the 100g and they seem to be doing fine. Am I still overstock? These guys aren't "adults" at 4"s are they?
