How to move 100fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Storage containers all the way. I brought my fish from Houston to north Louisiana using rubbermaids and battery pumps. Got em cheap online too. Rubbermaids I got a goodwill for a dollar each. You could put 10 to 15 fish in something at least 20 gallons and an air pump. I imagine you can only move two containers at a time unless you have a taco van so you could use a standard pump at the old home and another at the new home with some valves for diffusion to all containers. All you would need is enough air for 4 containers on each pump for here and there (8) and then 2 battery pumps for transit. If it's cheaper, rig a bilge pump from the outdoor section of walmart to you power supply (12v - cigarette lighter wiring) and just point it so it splashes water. Might make a mess but walmart will take them back when you're done. lol

Yeah I can do that to. Walmart has a 40gal for 10 right now too. My friend told me don't feed them for a day to cut back nitrate when moving

Rubbermaid containers are great, and if you're only going 15 minutes, you should be fine. I routinely transport fish 45 minutes by car and just had a breeding group of angels sit in the bag for about 26 hours delivered Via UPS that showed up fine. Your 15 minute travel might be a little stressful, but certainly not deadly......

Not feeding for a day or so can go a long way as well.

Best of luck with the move! I think you'll be fine. Sounds like you've done your prep work.....

Wow, You are all right!. What ever works for you is great. Tire pumps might put in petroleum contaminants. They use oil products to lube them.

I would do several water changes during one week before the move to make sure there is not built up contaminants and don't feed them for at least two days before the move. I like to use a calmer and stress coat when I transfer my fish around. You can by them on line. It keeps the stress down and the PH where you want it. Then Put them in there new place but remember you have interrupted the nitrate cycle so it will not handle a big load of food too. To be safe you can purchase SafeStart by Tetra to renew the bacteria ASAP in the filter and the gravel etc. This will keep the ammonia away as long as you feed minimally for a few days. That is a common way to loose fish when there homes are moved. Good luck!

Stability has been my insurance plan for about 20 years. Great stuff. Not saying Safestart doesn't work, or might not be the exact same thing, but 20 years using Stability has never failed me........

SafeStart Is a resent product that is actual live bacteria. This has been a new thing in in Washington for the last 3 years. It really works well. Prior to these products the water additives were bacteria supports. I do not know what Stability is. Sounds great!

Sunday is the big day of moving a lot of fish. First tank setup tomorrow letting bacteria grow for a day, using the current 2 canister filter follow by ac110. Using stability and kordon water condition. Fingers cross

Use the tuberware containers as mentioned. Go to your LFS and get the large shipping bags that they get when they get shipments in. Line your tuberware containers with these so that it hangs over the edges, then when you put the lids on it creates a seal so there is no splashing and you don't get water all over the place when you start and stop. Drill or melt a hole in the lid large enough for a air hose to fit through, and put an air stone in there. Thats more than enough for the trip you are making. AmmoLock and StressCoat are some good ideas, also adding a few drops of clove oil to calm the fish down another suggestion.

I've moved fish this way from Washington to Nebraska, and from Mississippi to Missouri. It works. Large fish, small fish, its tried and true. Just don't over crowd and you're golden.

Can all your fish be kept together in 1 tank for a day? Put all the fish into the 180. Then move the other 2 tanks first set them up at the new house. When there ready then move all the fish to those tanks then move the 180.

Moving 100 gal first because its easiest, fish in 100 gal tank goes in the bathtub for 2 day, then once bacteria is good in 100 gal, I'm move fish from 180 to 100,then move the 180 and 75 gal sump right after. I'm using now 2 ac110 on the 100gal, using 2 canister in the bathtub, and using a 2200gph sump on the 180. All filter are old and hasn't been wash so hoping bacteria is still good. Boosting bacteria with stability, and using kordon water conditioner.
