how to plumb a built in overflow

I say Durso. If you're already gonna be running a sump, a bio tower is not needed. You'll have more media than you'll ever need in the sump. Unless of course you enjoy the sound of Niagra falls in your house

An isulated cap would all but reduce the niose level, but I would prob skip the hassel of sound proofing everything and just go with what you had suggested.

Yeah, it just depends what sound level you'll tolerate. I love sumps, but I want them dead quiet. My 190g will use the Beananimal overflow, which requires 3 holes just for the drain!

I have seen a lot of cool sump setups, but personally have never set one up myself. I sure could use your expertise in setting up the sump for the 240

Interesting. It's even better than the Herbie?

He does have two holes there. If he has a way to plumb his return in elsewhere, like behind the back and over the top, he could use those two in the overflow to do the Herbie. Or drill a new hole.

(Or just assume it'll never have problems and do a Herbie without a backup... heh)

Nah, not yet anyway. Egon from MFK is coming over this weekend to help me plumb this thing up though. Being he is an engineer and has a but load of monster tanks, I am sure we will figure something out. Just could use you as a neighbor that's all LOL

Ah I didn't even see the second hole. Provided he has enough room, this is perfect for a Herbie setup.

I always thought the Beananimal was just like the Herbie, but the more I see and read it seems like a much better option, and not much more work if you can drill holes yourself. The Herbie uses two vertical standpipes.

The Beananimal is basically using two Dursos. One is sealed to air though, that is the full siphon that handles the bulk of the flow. The second Durso has a vent, just like the Durso. This one is running a small amount of water at all times. Because it's a small flow, the water clings to the sides of the walls of the pipe, which creates no noise. When the water level rises too high, the little airline on this second Durso becomes submerged, creating a full siphon which handles a lot more flow.

Then you got the 3rd emergency drain as a last resort backup. This one will probably never get used, but it's cheap insurance. Seems like a great setup, which is why I decided to go with this one.

LOL, a little far for that Plumbing a basic sump is cake. If you try to go for a real quiet setup, it will take a little more planning and plumbing. If noise isn't an issue (like a garage tank), then you guys will be done in no time!

It is in my dinning room and the wife is use to it, so not overly worried about making it silent. I will keep you updated though so I do not hijack Ben's thread lol.

And here's the Herbie setup on my 57g. You can see how quiet it is (mic on my camera makes it a lot louder). You'll see that my emergency standpipe is flowing a tiny bit of water. This is a non-issue, as it can still handle the pump's flow in case of blockage.
