your temps way to low:( i keep young red tails in about 80-82:)

Cranking the temp up should make a big difference! Fish metabolism is based on water temperature as they are cold blooded. I would change more water and more often too as your bioload will increase at the higher temp if they indeed eat more.

ok so last night i increased the water temp to 82 degrees and was hoping they would feed this morning when i woke up. but they didnt even seem slightly interested in the shrimp. hopefully their metabolism will speed up soon and they will start eating twice a day.

will try feeding again tonight

78-80 is a good temp don't worry about that as mine have all be in those temps on a regular basis and all eat like it's their last day on earth

To hot in the water temperature and your shortening their potential life span to cold and they won't survive either but will go into a hibernation cycle in the inbetween temp. If they are active as you say then the temp is fine and there is something else happening... most likly a water quality issue or perhaps it's stress issue (being 2 in a single tank they could stress eachother out and possibly try to kill one another in the future) but chances are that it's a water issue at this point... What exactly are you checking for when you do your tests?

ph levels, ammonia, nitrates, nitrites.. and everything else that the kit says it tests for

i have tested everything 3 times. every "shows" normal and safe. idk maybe i just have wierd fish... i had oscars and other fish in the tank and when i did they would eat anything and everything i put in there

IMO the strips are junk, you might as well taste it and guess. liquid tests are worth the money. but when mine are young I jack the temp up, if theyre not eating still (incoming flame) use feeders usually increases intake as well as all the motion increases metabolism, just like exercise for us

haha i had the same exact thought about a week and a half ago... added about 2 dozen guppies and they are just getting bigger.. my RTC's havent shown the little interest in them. when they do eat.. the attack the food like something out of sharkweek but other than that they wont touch anything... like i said usually every other day

idk. its frustrating!

im thinkin it might be the 2 of them in the 55 gallon.. when i move them to the 240 hopefully everything changes and they start to act like normal RTC's... only time will tell tho
