So your telling me the guys who assemble tanks all day use their fingers? I don't believe that for a second... I should apply for a job at aqueon, I could save them major $$$$ Why deal with nasty crap on your hands if you don't have to..?
I may be coming into a 135 gallon, with one seal broken, is it possible to just reseal the one side? And would i need a different silicone to do so?
If you can I have started up a thread here that I would appreciate help with
I just got a 40l that I'm going to have to reseal and this thread helped considerably. I tried reading the silicone sticky and it left me more confused than when I started... I think I'm just gonna stop by lowes & home depot, look for an aquarium safe silicone and run with it
I just got done scraping the vertical seams & it looks like the bottom & top are absolutely fine...can I JUST reseal the verticals?
I still failed...not TOO miserably, but miserably enough I had a lot more trouble on the horizontal edges than I did on the verticals. I feel like I could have done a better job with a standard gun sized tube + caulk gun than I did with the little 3oz squeeze tubes. My biggest issue was trying to get all the old silicone off. I was using a razorblade, rubbing alcohol, vinegar & pure ammonia...I just could not seem to get it all off to save my life. I eventually just gave up and siliconed right over whatever was left. I think it might have held water for the most part, but I just found someone wiht a lot more experience here locally to do it for 20 bucks...would have cost me that much anyways getting more silicon, a caulk gun & all that jazz.
Failed attempt, but experience none-the-less and this thread was a good help getting me that far.
I just finished sealing a 135 this week that had a failed vertical seal on the back of the tank. The process is not that difficult overall, just have to take your time and be persistent with cleaning out all old silicone. The next most important step is dont skimp on the silicone when applying new seal, you can always clean up the excess after the fact. This is the second tank I have had to seal the first a 45 gal has been going strong now for about 4 years. Will be putting water in the 135 when I get home today to test the seal on it, wish me luck!!!!!
