I really dont think someone need to own tons of tanks to be qualified, they just need to learn about the species and havea good understanding on how tanks work /setup.
Yep, I have worked at a LFS on and off for 10 years. I still work there now part time on top of my regular job.

I have been maintaining tanks and setting up tanks for people for all these years, and helping people out with their questions at the LFS all the time, but I only setup a fish tank in my own house about a year ago (and it was only a small planted paludarium with ~8.5 gallons of water with some tetras and corys) and just this past month I did a 65 gallon planted brackish mangrove setup.

Now I have the bug though and I am already trying to figure out where to find the wall space to fit a 110 or a 220 gallon, lol.

Yup

Another tip for the thread starter, one I forgot to mention in my first post.

When scouting locations, while it may be nice to have your own lot with your own parking. it's not the best thing for a new startup. If your off a busy road between a bunch of larger stores like Walmarts and Home Depots, it could work, but people tend to be lazy or always in a rush, and try to kill multiple birds with one stone (ie, if your the only thing in the lot, and they only need a bag of dog food, they might go to another store that's in the same lot as something else they need).

I would recommend you try to find a nice strip mall setup, and go for a lot that has popular stores that draw people to the lot. Dunkin Donuts, UPS Store, Post Office, A Pizzeria or Chinese Food, Ice Cream Parlor, etc, etc. Being in a supermarket lot cant hurt either :D.

If possible, try to get a store next to a food place (pizza or Chinese, something slow that people have wait for). Chances are, many people waiting for their order will venture over to the pet shop to "walk around" and many times those walks will wind up turning into sales (and from there, a good chance of them becoming return customers)! Just make sure to keep your stock interesting and setup nice displays so you have something to grab the attention of people who are "Just Looking" :D.
