My neighbor bought a beautiful 70 Gallon corner tank. The first thing he did was purchase a EBJD. After 2 weeks of having the little guy (1 inch) all his color dissappeared. He took the lil guy to a local fish store and they informed him that this was a nock off, or harmone induced color.

I myself, want a true EBJD, does anyone know any hints to tell the difference between Harmone induced and true EBJD??

I didn't even know there were knock off EBJDs! I'd like to see a picture of the fish your friend bought.

I've seen plenty of EBJD's but never heard of a knock off either..

never heard of that.. could it just be stressed? or a poor diet?

Same here. I'd kind of like to have one, but all the ones I see are very deformed inbred monsters, but still cost an outrageous price. The ones I see, I know are real as I see them at the same shop for months at a time with the same coloration, because no one wants to buy such a messed up 1-2" fish for $50-$75

Never heard of this either.I know they do this with malawi cichlids but that only makes all the fish look like adult males.
I stalked my ebjd at the store for a month before buying, wanted to be sure it was healthy and feeding.

Haven't heard of it, but if you question its legitimacy, just don't buy it and go for one that looks like the real thing

sounds more like a poor diet to me. I have heard of hormone induced coloring, but I have never seen it used on anything but super, super expensive fish.

What we were told is that (like the Red Sevrums) some young JD are fed specific harmones to increase their blue pigmintations. Once they are off this harmone, on normal food, their color changes back

They were purchased from azgardens.com fyi

he looked more like this guy than a brilliant blue like most. Though i hear they are all pretty gold when they are very young.
