How to tell if it is a FAKE?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lol, sry to ask but what does EBJD stand for and haha how can a fish be a fake when i got my JD he was dark but when i brought him home and put him in my tank he lost alot of color but he is slowly getting it back

Haven't heard of that either, strange.
Andyjs-deformed inbred monsters? lmao! I got my 2 from ThatPetPlace.com (of all places)3-4 months ago. They've grown like crazy. They were 3/4" when I got them and they're 4" now (counting tail). Georgeous teal, sky blue, dark blue, black and aqua colors. So far so good but I'm loving these 2.
Just had to edit and show a picture. This was a month or so ago of the bulkier one (I think male).

well good news a found a breader here in Houston! He deals with one of my favorite local fish stores and says he will have his 2inchers ready fairly soon. woohoo (40bucks for 2", not too bad).

He has not heard of any "fake" EBJDs to his knowledge and just said that some of them loose thier blue for gold/white at times, and when they are small they are more supseptible to disease (like most recessive gene creatures).

/shrug, either way my fish should be ready for pick up in a few weeks woohoo

If a standard Dempsey were hormone treated this may explain an increase in blue coloration, but the pattern of Blue Dempseys are completely different than the pattern of standard Dempseys. I highly doubt that your neighbors Blue Dempseys were anything other than Blue Dempseys. When moved to a new home it’s common for a Cichlids colors to fade, and this is what I think your neighbors fish was experiencing.

hothew84, as I mentioned, it’s normal for a Cichlids color to fade when they are rehomed. I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Oh, and “EBJD” stands for Electric Blue Jack Dempsey.

Tibbs, congratulations on finding a local supplier. It’s always nice to be able to hand pick your own fish :D

I have owned about 8 or 9 EBJDs, from two different suppliers and they had a brownish yellow cast to most of the body when I got them. As they matured they started to turn more blue until they were solid turquoise-blue. They tend to color up more with age.

It may also be the tank. Was the tank light or dark colors? I noticed when I put my EBJD into a tank with light sand and a light background he was as white as a ghost. When I put him in a darker tank he gets his color back. Natural defense? or stress? Just my 2cents

It seems to be leading to stress i would imagine, the buggers died not but 3-4 weeks later. I hear it is common for EBJDs to pass on and only about 50% trive. Either way i am waiting until my tank is 100% stable (since it is newly redone) before i tackle one of these expensive guys. Our Houston Breader said it would take a few months for them to be truly ready for a new home anyway :)
