you can easily see the differnce by comparing mjuniors sweet cichla together. inyourface... your guy is deff not a wild mono but most likely a farm mono....its so hard to describe the characteristics because there is no specific name for the characteristics.. grrrr ... hard to explain. anyways.. wild peru monos have long dark WIDE black bars... a common characteristic of monos are black markings in between their bars which you will never see on occelaris. instead you will see yellow spangles on their bodies or you may know them as dots. the yellow spangles will eventually turn into a fully body color of yellow/olive/green..ect. when occelaris are young they tend to be olive while monos more gold or yellow. occelaris always have blazing red eyes were monos may sometimes show during aggression or stress like mjunior also said or dont have red eyes at all and will never show them. occelaris forms a oceli (circle like an orino has) where a mono would have their 3rd bar but more towards the top of the fish. when younger they will have a narrow bar and at the top of their bars they will be forming ocelis with the top of their bars black. it is usually bold towards the top and fades towards the bottom of their bars... the first bar/ocili being weak theirs second being darker and their third being the darkest b/c this is the one that will always show. monos have high dorsals, and longer faces and so on. .... sorry if you can not relate to what i am saying.. there is so many major and minor characteristics to look for. the easiest way to distingish the two is to compare pictures of the 2 species ;)
