How to Turn Wading Pool into a Pond - HELP!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
After cleaning, rinse well (there may not be chlorine left but there could be salts), fill and test the water for chlorine. If the water just has chlorine let the system run for a week and retest. If the water has chlorimines you have to treat the water and any water you top off with from now on.

If you can finagle a new pump with the deal, get a high efficiency pond pump. Pool pumps run about $200 a month @ 8-10hrs a day here.

Consider a bog (10'x10', 5'x20') as part of the DIY filter, cheap and maintenance free.

i wish it was that easy,........... i've heard it's not as simple as that when converting a pool to pond.

i'd like to hear more than that if i'm planning to put some of my prize fish in the pond. or is it REALLY that simple???

No, it's not that simple. But they aren't paying for your fish are they?!

I'll give it a day for some others to help as I'm a little busy right now.

Did you find out if you have chlorine or chlorimines there yet?

yea, that's what I'm saying,........... it's easy when it's not your fish going in there. i wanna do it right and not kill any of my fish. i actually care about my fish.

i have not had time to check the water at this time. the home just went into escrow and the doors and gates are still locked. i was last there for an inspection which they found that the pump was not working right.

in the future i may turn it back into a pool for my kids when they are a bit bigger,........ in that case, does it make more sense to use pond liner instead of worrying about chloramine? thanks again!

You still will have to deal with chlorimines when you fill it and top it off.

Do you know what the pond is made out of? (painted?)

You could use a liner and it may save the surface of the pond but mildew behind the liner could also ruin the surface too. Pricce liner, that may change your mind.

Call the water supplier (county or township etc.) and ask how they treat the water, chlorine or chlorimines for that location (address).

Or you could just let your kids "swim with the fishes"

Ya is this your regular concrete plasted over pool? Painted concrete? Or just a liner put in the ground?

Theres no need to worry about chlorine from the old pool days. Once you fill it back up it will read 0 on the test kit.

If its plaster/paint over concrete I personally would just mix chlorine and water in a bucket and give it a good scrub down

As for the filtration I would just use the pool system. Returns on the pool are made to circulate the water into the main drain/skimmers. If it has a sand filter use that then get another sand filter and fill that with bio media.

I wish I had a pic of this pond I saw over the summer. had a total of 15hp of pumps, 2 sand filters for filtering and 4 sand filters filled with bio balls.

15hp...

He is looking fo effecient pumps and that may be overkill.

I only use NurseryPro or Aquascape pumps. If you go to www.aquascapeinc.com you will see some awesome ideas and tech info. on there pumps and other accsesories. They should have both regular and high effecient pumps avail. I would spend the little extra money upfront for the high effecient pump. It will pay itself off in the first season. I run my 4000 gph pump year round and it cost about 15 bucks a month. This is only my opinion.
