After cleaning, rinse well (there may not be chlorine left but there could be salts), fill and test the water for chlorine. If the water just has chlorine let the system run for a week and retest. If the water has chlorimines you have to treat the water and any water you top off with from now on.
If you can finagle a new pump with the deal, get a high efficiency pond pump. Pool pumps run about $200 a month @ 8-10hrs a day here.
Consider a bog (10'x10', 5'x20') as part of the DIY filter, cheap and maintenance free.
