How was your experience with Don Conkel?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Don have a website? Never heard of him.

The biggest thing that I heard about him was about Hybridization. I was warned that when rain causes flooding that overflows from one pond to the next it causes intermixing. But if this is the case then it will go on with any of the breeding ponds in the Southeast. I do own a very nice Argentea from Conkel, in fact it is better looking than the other 3 that I have from Rapps. ( they are all still very young though
I was under the impression that they only do business with wholesalers and require a liscensing number. He never did respond to my emails.

i think he only started doing business recently with hobbyists.
i concur about my argentea... check out mine from conkel... PERFECT (well, IMHO at least  )
F0 male... this would have cost a lot more from other places. i think i paid $25 @ 6"TL. nuff said :D

nice fins at around 8"

Very nice Ewok.:) Is it a true F0? I have been told that some Breeders classify pond specimens as a F0. Just a rumor that I heard before, don't know from experience.

i am not aware or knowledgeable about how they classify. i perhaps am trusting like that. but i suppose if they are to maintain their reputation we have to take their word, eh?
thanks for the complements. my F0 altifrons is a fat piggie, my F0 grammodes is also getting nice and chunky, and the bartoni are spawning like rabbits. i'm a happy customer :)

A few years ago when I took my kids to Disney World I called him out of the blue, he was very gracious, invited me over and I returned home with about 50 fish, they were all great fish in excellent condition(argentea, pearsei, rergani, etc) for me a very positive experiance.

I have been told by several in the industry that Conkel does indeed sell pond fish as "wild."

At the least, I'd inquire about the collecting trips he's been on recently. A 6" fish isn't a year old in most cases, so if you cannot confirm a collection trip in '07 you probably don't have a truly wild fish.
