Howto clean sand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There is a medium sand that I use I got it from home depot. Its quickrete medium sand it's like 100 pounds. Doesn't cost much maybe $7. Just put it in like a 5 gallon bucket rinse it ALOT. Repeat. It looks nice. I have it in my tanks. But if you have a HOB filter sand is never a good choice if your fish mess with it.

Yep, I'm 100% sure that's what I got. $5.50 each bag of 50lb at my local Home Depot. I was at home depot and figured I'd grab that while I was there to start my build

I got 3 bags and after cleaning it was able to fill a 40B to about 4" and a 20L to about 2.5-3". Overall it was pretty clean stuff and looks like beach sand lol

I'm not sure if location matters for pricing, but I live in Tampa, FL

I used this for my colorquartz, it should work well for sand.
put the sand in a 5G bucket to about half full. I used a hose hooked up to my laundry tub, but wherever, tilt the bucket a bit and with a good water flow, keep pushing the hose to the bottom, pulling it out and moving it a bit and push it down in again and again. when the water runs clean, stick your hand in and mix well from the bottom to the top and try again. keep going until mixing doesn't make the water dirty.

HOB is just for extra filtration and you don't say? Does your LFS specialize in one of the worlds most sensitive fish? Dont think so
