Howto clean sand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
PFS is good, or Quikrete All purpose is good too.. IMO sand is sand as far as getting into filters, you just have to clean and make sure your not letting it build up.

On another forum, I mentioned that I also wanted to use play sand (cheap, comes in huge bags, etc) and was specifically told not to use it as it would constantly get sucked into the filter (I have a canister). They told me to go with PFS instead. I figured I may as well play it safe, especially with the PFS being pretty cheap

I promiss you those hob will be garbage in a few days. I have a bunch of lazy redtails and they still managed to kick up enough sand to ruin The shaft. If your local fish store knew anything they wouldn't of told you play sand. Play sand is fine if you like ruining filters and having a messy tank. Everyone on this thread is telling you not to use it.

If a potentially $12 difference in the price of the two sands is enough to get you to go against everyone's advice and risk disaster than maybe this isn't the hobby for you

Well to be fair.....

There is TONS of members here who use play sand just fine... I mean PFS is the best one but not the only option..

Just go with quickrete. It's cheap easy to find. Looks good. It's not concrete. It's not to dirty. Doesn't take to long to clean.

That's in my tank, the all purpose kind love it, PFS doesn't look as sandy, the Quikrete looks like the bottom when you go diving

From what I've heard, PFS is the way to go. Everybody also talks about how light play sand is and you suck it up when you vacuum and will eventually end up replacing the sand, so wouldn't it be worth it to just get the PFS instead? Just a thought.

I used quickrete play sand at $4.50 a bag and it was play sand. It was EXTREMELY foggy even after very thorough cleaning. But I had very skittish fish and a hob in that tank. Be careful not to put your filter intake within 3" of the sand because then it's possible to suck in sand which you don't want. Good luck! Oh btw here's the tank with the play sand which eventually started to stop fogging up after the fish destroyed it.
