HRP fry - several different colors?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
HRP usually dont show stripes that dark. And HRP female dont normally have that much orange on the belly. Also usually a little longer and skinnier.

Hi All,

Thanks for the responses. I guess I wasn't aware of how uncommon it is to see this many color variations in one batch of fry. It seems like the parents are always guarding a batch of eggs in the main tank, however I don't pull them out or separate them so the eggs usually don't last long (I think it's the pleco that gets them). I'll try to pull them out into a separate tank and see if I get another multi-colored batch.

Also...they were sold to me as HRP by the lfs -- what characteristics of HRP are you not seeing? From everything I can find, the major difference is the red in the tails and fins, plus more colorful overall (blues, oranges). The camera flash washed the red out pretty bad, plus it comes and goes depending if they're breeding or their mood or who knows what. Just curious.

THanks!

Ok. Here are my HRP's for comparison.

Likely what you have are hybrids, and by inbreeding them you're expressing the homozygous recessive traits. Some resembling the HRP ancestor, some resembling the convict ancestor, and some being leucistic.

Similar to but not exactly like F1 and F2 plant hybrids (the difference being that you can't self pollinate) where the F1 generation is identical in shape and genetics while the F2 is very variable.

these are pics of HRP's. true HRP shouldn't throw that many color combinations. In fact unless they are of the line bred morph that throw leucistic then they shouldn't throw multiple color combinations at all.

I do believe that your fish have HRP in them, but I think they have been crossed with Cons.

I have found the opposite to be true, but agree with the rest. Ive purchased HRPs from Rapps, Ken Davis and Ira and all had very prominent stripes(except the leucistic obviously). The only 2 regions being Rio Monga & Rio Danli. Some enthusiasts think that HRPs are possibly just convict variants from different regions. I cant recall hearing of any proof, I just see it a lot.

Pics below are of the different ones Ive had. I think the OPs male is a hybrid and the female a convict.

Bill, I used to have what was called a panamanian convict that looked just like yours. Has anyone else ever mentioned that? I saw Rapps had some panamanian convicts for sale recently but never saw pics from anyone that bought any.
