From the pics I'd say your dominant pair are just regular convicts, I can't see any HRP traits in them. Your second pair do have some HRP traits (especially the female). There's a few 'races' of HRP cropping up now but I'd be suspect of that first pair, it would also explain the frequency of breeding as HRP are not quite as prolific as regular cons.

i agree 100% true hrps look like this ( these are breeding colors) the true hrps are on the left. the hrp x convict (most likely what you have) are on the right notice how they are all blue. and the other pair is black.

Wow, yours do look alot different.

I bought all of them from Ken Davis who is a reputable breeder from what I have seen on the site. They are from his wild pairs. The two males and the dark female are from the same parents where the second female is from a different wild pair. Makes ya wonder though!! Where are yours from?

the female is wild caught from Honduras. but the male is inbreed from his dad who sadly passed away... he was also wild.

Hmmmm. When i first got mine they looked similar to yours stripe wise. But when they go into breeding color both get the stripes, one more than the other, and the one with the more stripes has more red in his fins.

Anyone else have pics of theirs in breeding colors and non breeding.

you lost me at "When i first got mine they looked similar to yours stripe wise. But when they go into breeding color both get the stripes"

here are other breeder from the past

Are your pictures taken with the flash? That will make their colors look different as well.

I dont use the flash with my pics. But When I first got my 4 HRP's from Ken Davis they were light colored and the only one that had stripes was the one from different parents.

Sorry these pictures are horrible, this is their first day in my tank.

Only when my fish are fighting or breeding do the stripes show.

Is there any other characteristics that differentiate a convict from a HRP besides colors or stripes?

yes i do use flash. on your first pic on the post above. the cichlids on far left and far right. are for sure true HRPS

If there was no chance of a mix-up then you do have HRP (Ken is a great guy I believe), maybe the camera is not doing them justice, I know HRP are very hard to get a good pic of. As I said tho', there are HRP coming in from different catchment locations, these are showing regional variations which is complicating the ID. Might be best when you pass the fry on to pass the history (if they're interested, and they should be!) of the fish on too. All my HRP (normal and leucistic) came from Jeff Rapps originally, they haven't been kept with any other convict/hrp strains, although the leucistic might be from another race originally ???.

Yeah grummie, yours (thread starter)is most likely rio mongo HRP, also you dont sex HRP viva the colour of their stomach, females are smaller, rounder and show there bars more often. Its stupid, there not convicts so dont think they are sexed the same way, people who say that dont know what there talking about.
Rio mongo f2 pair- http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102407
i have a 4" male HRP waiting for my other females to catch up in size with him:)
