man, you people!

you all morn at the sight of a picture like this and feel better about it by saying how horrible the person is who has done this, when how much better are you? do any of you use live feeders? how about if you have eaten any meat lately? what makes one living thing's life more important than another? is it your personal prefence? because you don't see the meat you eat get scared, tortured, killed and then cut from the carcas, then what it doesn't happen?! if you try to say that livestock and feeders are raised for food then you are contradicting your "caring" self buy judgeing their lives. who are all of you to judge this fisher/spearer? you may try to make the argument that this fish is so old that it deserves to live; when looked at from another perspective; it was lucky enough to have experienced what it did. how about feeders that are robbed of life so young why do they desirve it less? you sterio type the fisher man as feeling macho from this...... he gets about as much machoness from it as you do righteousness from condeming him. as for that monster fish in the pic; imagin all the smaller fish that it has eaten because it was bigger than them, well humans are on the top of the food chain...... deal with it
remeber LIFE FEEDS ON LIFE FEEDS ON LIFE FEEDS ON LIFE

I don't eat meat, I don't wear leather, I don't use feeders. I have no problem with meat eaters at all, or people useing feeders...I just choose not to. Mostly because I don't like where the meat comes from (Factory Farms). Hunting and fishing is a much better way to get your meat IMO. I actually work on a beef cattle/pig/chicken farm. My problem lies within the fact that this fish took two hours to kill and the guy has no respect for the animal other then to use it as a throphy. You see the difference....I know you do.

the meat you eat gets killed for money
pleasure or money doesn't matter as long as it serves the same purpose
food

Dude..but is this subject fish killed for food?!?!?!?! can u see the difference now?

BGG, it's your opinion and your respect to bestow, IMO open water spear fishing is a kick and a challenge, reefdiving may be different and I doubt I would take a big grouper like that one.
I see a lot of preconceptions jumping out in this thread, things like the fish has to be old, or he probably doesn't even like the taste of fish.
Some fish grow quickly, you don't know him. For all you know this one trip satisfies a dream of a lifetime and he eats fish at every meal.
I hunt, I fish, I cast nets, and I use a hawiian spear.
I don't catch and release, I kill and eat. I don't hunt for trophy racks because younger bucks taste better, I obey fish limits and game laws. I make it a point to kill at least one animal to eat each year, it is part of my religion. I wear leather but seldom fur. I don't believe in wasting hides, I try not to kill anything that I won't eat.
Growing cotton kills more animals than growing wool, synthetics kill more than either.
Longliners and commercial drag trawls do more harm in a season than all the divers in the world can do in a lifetime. Asian Arowanas became uncommon in the wild because it was a status display to eat or keep them.
Just drool over the fish and drop the knee jerk generalities.

WooOooo... Didn't mean to start a post that made some people kinda annoyed i'm sorry. But this is a type of grouper a warsaw or something. So you can eat it eat. And i know for a fact that this guy has a commercial licence to sell fish for food, which is what he did so please people stop getting annoyed at each other.

is it tasty? thats a huge fish o__o

I have done some spear fishing, its quite fun, even though I wouldnt even think about smoking a fish that huge, its an amazing shot to bring that thing in.

either way, poor fish, I hope that guys happy he just killed an incredible fish just for those couple pictures.

He didn't just kill it for those pictures, he's has a commercial fishing licence so he fishes to make a living.

You're right that not all spearfishers and bowfishers are like this, bgut I know a lot of them (20 or 30... I don't know them all really well, but I've been around them enough to get my fill of the majority of them). But, the vast majority of fish like that that are caught using spears are simply hung up as trophies, no? I've also seen the posts of similar people on fishing forums and the way that they defend themselves for doing it is a load of nonsense. I suppose that I don't have anything against those of you that catch something and use as much of it that is at all possible, but MANY spearfishers and bowfishers, and whole bunch of other types of "sportsmen" just kill for sport, which I view as being just plain sick. I did generalize too much, but I think that we can both that the majority of spearfishers and bowfishers just hunt for sport and don't actually use anything on the animal that they've killed (it may not be the vast majority, but a majority nonetheless). And I also don't care for spearfishing as it can turn perfectly wonderful diving areas into awful diving areas as the fish are constantly hiding. I could go on and on, but I'd rather not...

Dude....i think you get this perspective totally all wrong...

Fish eat another fish to survive..that is totall fine!! this is how the ecosystem is..the higher u are up there, u feed on the ones lower in the food chain...

BUT! to KILL just for the sheer PLEASURE of it....to show you are a better being just by killing a weaker being...is just sick in the stomach!

I doubt this spear fishin dude speared that giant fish for the sake of feeding his family?

think about it.
I think that you summed it up pretty well. :)
