Humane Death

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was told clove oil is the best. If god forbid I had to put a fish out thats what I would do. Also (not quite sure how humane) Ive heard putting him into a bowl then overdosing on alkaseltzer (typos) or Ice but that to me seems bad. Id go with clove oil if you HAVE to put him out.

Just get a a large zip lock bag or other plastic bag and fill it halfway with water and then add some of the clove oil, say a teaspoon to a half gallon (may vary depending on the size of the fish). Mix well and then add the fish. The fish will slowly go under and then cease to breath. Typically with other fish, they will go belly up, but since it is an eel it might be a little different.

I am sorry for your loss. It sucks because they completely depend on us for everything it just feels like we let them down. :(

Best Wishes

Yea i feel pretty bad because I took the strainer off to clean it because it had algae build up and stuff and I forgot to put it back on and now it cost my eel his life.

I wouldn't get rid of it yet. I'll keep them around until they die.

If I had to, I would do it fast. Hammer + head works every time and is really quick... flash of lighting and lights out.

Killing is killing no matter the level of hypocrisy involved.

Just take a bucket of tank water (a bucket you never plan to use for fish again) & put a couple of droppers full (not drops) of clove oil into the bucket & stir well. When I use for tranquilizing a fish I use 1 drop/cup of water & if I don't put the fish back into tank water within about 3 minutes, it is very difficult to wake up. (Just to tell you that a lot more CO in a bucket should do it for sure.) Then place the fish in there. It will drift away to sleep & eventually stop breathing. After about 1/2 hour, you can bag him & freeze him, just to be sure. At that point, if there's any chance he's still alive (highly doubtful though), he'll be gone after that for sure--very humane. RIP :(

BTW nutcase, why would you remove a fish for routine tank maintance?

Okay, firstly how bad is it really? Is there any way u could post a pic. Would maybe be graphic, but ppl need to help u make an educated decision on what to do. If he only lost some skin and maybe his eye then WTF is the point of killing him if he can still have a long life maybe? Try to post us a pic, coz u are always gonna wonder whether he might've survived if u hadn't killed him. :nilly:

Well I had planned to euthanize him today with clove oil. But when I woke up this morning he had died. I knew it was a matter of time but I just kept debating as to wether or not I should do it. I guess I shouldve done it earlier to put him out of his suffering. I have definitely learned my lesson but am sad it cost my eel his life.
