thats ridiculous. High humidity is actually better for the lungs and helps people breathe easier because there's moisture in the air and helps allergy patients

I'm not an allergy specialist, a doctor, or trained in lung problems- but I've spoken w/ several people who are and I've been told the more the merrier.

I'm in Utah (a high desert) where it is very arid and humidity is quite low, the doctors and allergy specialists have spoken out against de-humidifiers.

It's my understanding that dryer air is bad for the lungs. As mentioned above keep up on water changes to keep smell down, and clean the bottoms of your lids regulary to reduce mold growth.

If your dad is still adament the fish tank humidity isn't healthy talk to some professionals in your area-nothing like a person in a lab coat to change the opinions of people w/o lab coats (see the milgram studies from the 1950's, authority figures are able to make people do crazy stuff).

well, I have some uses for those old halloween costumes that I have lying around. The humidity isn't bad, it is good because our lungs need to be moist to work, when alveoli in the lungs dry up it is like emphusima (sp?). The only worries is that mold and fungi like moist areas too so it is their spores we must worry about.

What do you consider high humidity? Anything above 50%? If water condenses on your walls then you risk getting mold spores in your home. If that happens your family might have to move out so that it can be removed.

Having lids on your tank will defiantly help with evaporation. But take into consideration the size of the room the tanks will be in. How often all the doors and windows to the room are closed? How long are they closed for? Is anyone sleeping in that room? All of these things and many others need to be answered before we suggest that humidity won't be a problem.
