HURRY AND HELP!!! OH MY GOD WTF IS WRONG!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
only 1 is still affected. thanks for everyones concern.
did a 60% WC yesterday. one of the small gars(the nonaffected one) swam up the siphon. lol. i just picked up the siphon and he fell out. he was chasing a dead feeder the the other two gars fought over and neither one got. lol

yeah i wish i got pics of the two fighting. second time and it is AWESOME!!!
i still feel bad for the little guy. Once the big one tryd to steal the fish the other time the little one(same one, houdini) tryd to steal the big guys(gary) fish.

I had a similar, if not the same, thing happen when my filter quit. The ph went south. I added sodium bicarbonate and got the ph back up. I've found the gar and other natives in my tanks like a more alkaline water. I had never tested the ph in any of my tanks until I had this problem, so I have no background on the subject, just telling you what worked for me.

I was feeding the other day, and my snook got greedy and grabbed two feeders at once. The tail of one was still sticking out of his mouth a ways, and my florida gar swam up and grabbed the tail! He literally tried to pull it out of the snooks mouth, but all he got was some caudal fin for his troubles.

Anyways, I hope they bounce back fast and keep getting better.

lol. thats great.
yep they are doin good.
thanks for the concern everyone.

I feed live. end of story. if they will take other stuff then i will give them but they are gonna continue to get live.
I severly doubt u didnt feed u gars for 7 months. and if u did then u need to hand over ur gars to those of us who can obviously care for them better. i.e. those of us(me included) who are some what experienced gar keepers that properly feed them.
look, i feed live. many do and many do not. they were properly QT so im not sure what happened.

Been keeping Gars for over 20 years and only had health issues when they were feed live foods many years ago when I knew nothing about Gars and thinking that they should only be feed feeders.
Seven months is more than possible because of thier ability to store fat and regulate the rate the body can consume the stored fat. But being a superior intellect such as yourself, feeding Gars feeder fish and having current health issues and not knowing how to help them, I guess you knew that.

yep starving is the way to fix it......
and yes if u want to try and make a joke, my IQ is 135. so yes i do have a high intellect. to be exact, my intellect falls within the top 2.2% of the general population.
and i know how to treat them but i wasnt sure if there were any more effective methods. i know meds are normally a no no but this appeard to be extreme, and i was just checking. AND they are much better using exactly what was suggested and what i would have done if i wasnt on mfk. I do a lot of research on my gar. Im not a lazy pet owner.
i will contiue to feed live. i qt my feeders. i actually think it came from the worms i just started feeding. seven months might be possible but it shouldnt be done. let me make sure this is clear. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD U STARVE UR FISH FOR 7 MONTHS(if u truly did). why would u do such a thing? it makes no sence. u can get ur gars on preparred without starving. In fact since i am getting more gar i decided that, even though im still feeding manly live, i should get my gar eatting some shrimp. my largest gar, even after feeding large amount of feeders and worms, ate 3 shrimp with no hesitation. for the first time. NO starvation needed. which i will admit is exciting. he ate them for the first time ever!!
now i will admit prepared is good but i still believe in feeding live as well. not just prepared.
sry if i came across a little aggressive earlier. my bad.
and though i have a high IQ, i SUCK at spelling. LOL.

7 months may be possible, but it's not responsible fish keeping. unless prepped to 'store fat' and 'regulate the rate' they will become quite unhealthy even if this doesn't show externally. no responsible gar keeper should be putting their gars through that long of a fast. period.--
